Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The aftermath of the gala was a spectacular, public demolition.
Derek was arrested before he could even step off the stage, charged with grand larceny, bank fraud, and identity theft. Because the loan he had forged my name on was a federal commercial instrument, the FBI quickly took over the investigation.
His firm fired him before the night was over, issuing a public statement completely distancing themselves from his "unauthorized and criminal actions."
Three days later, I sat on my porch, drinking a cup of hot tea.
The morning air was crisp and clean, the scent of pine and salt drifting off the water. The heavy, dark cloud that had hung over my head for six years had finally dissolved.
A screech of tires broke the silence.
A beat-up sedan pulled into my driveway, and my mother and Valerie scrambled out. Valerie was holding baby Liam, her hair messy, her makeup smeared. My mother looked furious, her face red with rage.
They stormed up the porch steps, but before they could reach the door, they were stopped by two security guards Lauren had hired to protect the property.
"Claire!" my mother screamed, her voice cracking. "How could you do this to your own family? Derek is in jail! His bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars! Valerie is homeless! They’re going to lose everything!"
I stood up slowly, holding my mug, and walked to the edge of the porch.
"You mean they’re going to lose my everything," I said, my voice dead calm.
"He's your sister's baby!" my mother cried, gesturing to Liam. "He’s innocent! How can you be so cold, so heartless?"
"I bought that baby a blanket, a crib, and a future, Mom," I said, looking at Valerie, who couldn't even meet my eyes. "But you three decided to steal my name, my money, and my dignity instead. You wanted me to be 'useful' for paying your bills while you laughed behind my back."
"Claire, please," Valerie sobbed, holding the baby tighter. "I have nowhere to go. The leasing company threw all my things on the street. I have no money."
"You have the fifty thousand dollars you stole from my joint account, Valerie," I replied. "Which my lawyers are currently clawing back through a civil conspiracy lawsuit. You, Derek, and our mother are all being sued for financial fraud. I’ve also filed for a full partition of our family trust, which means, Mom, you'll be selling your house to pay back the funds you helped them launder."
My mother gasped, clutching her chest. "You wouldn't... I am your mother!"
"A mother doesn't stand in a hospital room and call her daughter 'cold' and 'useless' because she suffered from infertility," I whispered, the final drop of warmth leaving my eyes. "You chose your family, Mom. And I chose mine. Now get off my property before I have the guards call the police."
They stood there for a long moment, realizing that the gentle, submissive woman they had exploited was gone forever. Valerie turned, sobbing, and dragged our mother back to the car.

As they drove away, I took a deep breath of the fresh, clean air.
I was finally free.
