Chapter 4 - The Charlotte Trap

By Friday afternoon, the stage was set.

Bryce had left early in the morning, claiming he had an early conference in Charlotte. In reality, he had rented a luxury moving van, picked up Maren and newborn Leo from the hospital, and driven them two hours south to the gated waterfront community of Lake Norman, just outside Charlotte.

The estate at 142 Whispering Pines Drive was a magnificent six-bedroom waterfront mansion featuring a private dock, an infinity pool, and panoramic views of the water. The monthly lease was eighteen thousand dollars, with a mandatory two-hundred-thousand-dollar upfront security and purchase-option deposit.

Bryce had executed the lease contract under Kellan Holdings LLC, using a cashier's check drawn from the First National account—the account he believed had just been bolstered by the four-hundred-thousand-dollar equity transfer from Tessa’s North Raleigh home.

At three o'clock that afternoon, Bryce stood on the expansive timber deck of the lake house, holding a glass of champagne.

Maren stood beside him, holding baby Leo wrapped in an expensive cashmere blanket Bryce had bought on his way out of Raleigh.

"I still can't believe this is ours," Maren sighed, looking out over the sparkling lake. "It feels like a dream."

"It’s not a dream, Maren," Bryce said proudly, putting his arm around her. "It’s what happens when you have vision. Tessa would have stayed in that old house in Raleigh for the rest of her life, counting pennies and weeping over baby clothes. We were made for something bigger."

"Did she suspect anything when you left this morning?" Maren asked.

"Not a thing," Bryce chuckled. "She even packed me a travel basket with muffins and a thermos of coffee. The divorce papers are being served to her by my process server at six o'clock tonight. By the time she realizes what hit her, our court injunction will have frozen her remaining assets under marital dispute laws."

Maren kissed his cheek. "You thought of everything."

At that exact moment, the heavy wrought-iron security gates at the entrance of the driveway slowly swung open.

A sleek black Lincoln Navigator pulled up the long gravel driveway, followed closely by two white sedans bearing the official seal of the North Carolina State Sheriff's Department and an unmarked black SUV.

Bryce frowned, setting his champagne glass down on the outdoor table. "Who is that? I didn't order any deliveries for this afternoon."

"Maybe it’s the property management company dropping off the spare pool keys?" Maren suggested, stepping back toward the glass doors.

The vehicles came to a stop in the courtyard.

The door of the black Navigator opened, and a woman stepped out onto the gravel.

She wore a tailored navy trousersuit, dark sunglasses, and high heels that clicked with sharp, absolute authority against the stone. Her hair was styled immaculately, her expression cool, calm, and completely unreadable.

Bryce’s jaw dropped.

"Tessa?" he stammered, stepping down off the deck steps onto the lawn. "What... what are you doing here? How did you find this place?"

Tessa didn't answer immediately. She stood by her vehicle, taking off her sunglasses, her clear hazel eyes locking onto Bryce with a chilling, detached calm.

From the two police sedans, four uniformed deputies stepped out, accompanied by Marcus Vance and a stern-looking man in a grey suit holding a thick legal folder.

Maren rushed down the deck steps, her face pale with sudden panic, holding baby Leo tight against her chest. "Tessa? What is going on?!"

Tessa looked at her younger sister—the girl she had protected, fed, educated, and loved for twelve years. Her voice, when she spoke, was quiet, precise, and bounced clearly off the stone walls of the mansion.

"Hello, Maren," Tessa said softly. "I see you brought the baby to my new house."
