Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Showdown

The glass-and-steel monolith of Volkov Global Holdings loomed over downtown Baltimore like a monolith of corporate power.
On Friday night at 8:00 PM, the forty-fifth-floor boardroom was packed with twelve regional capos, senior directors, and financial backers. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Julian Vance, a slick, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit, wearing an expression of smug, manufactured grief.
"Gentlemen," Vance announced, tapping his pen against the table. "We have waited long enough. Damian Volkov is incapacitated. His silence proves he is no longer fit to lead. I move that we invoke Article Nine of the syndicate charter and vote to transition executive control to—"
CLACK.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, resounding bang.
Every head snapped toward the entrance.
Stepping through the threshold was Viktor, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. Behind him walked Damian Volkov.
He was dressed in a razor-sharp, custom-tailored black suit that hid the physical toll of his poisoning. His silver-streaked hair was combed back, his posture rigidly straight. He didn't look like a dying man; he looked like the executioner.
Julian Vance turned completely white, his pen slipping from his fingers and clattering against the glass table. "Damian... you're... you're supposed to be—"
"Dead?" Damian finished smoothly, his deep, resonant voice echoing off the glass walls. He walked down the center of the room, his stride steady, though a fine sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead. "Sorry to disappoint you, Julian."
"This is a sham!" Vance shouted, standing up and trying to rally the room. "He’s weak! Look at him! He's leaning on his men! Vote for me, or the syndicate falls apart by midnight!"
The capos shifted uneasily in their seats, whispering among themselves, unsure who to trust.
Then, the side door of the boardroom opened.
I stepped into the room, holding Lila’s small hand. She wore a neat little navy blue coat, and she was clutching her gray cloth rabbit.
Every eye in the room turned toward us in utter shock. Senior mafia bosses and ruthless killers stared in disbelief as a kitchen maid and a four-year-old child walked into the most dangerous room in Maryland.
Damian didn't look back at us. He kept his eyes locked on Julian Vance as he reached into Viktor’s briefcase and slammed a thick stack of documents onto the table.
"You embezzled twenty-two million dollars from the northern docks, Julian," Damian said softly, stepping closer to the trembling CFO. "You funneled it to the New York families. And worst of all... you poisoned my wine."
"Prove it!" Vance shrieked, sweating profusely. "You have no proof! Who's going to back your claims? A maid?!"
Damian smiled—a cold, terrifying sight.
"I don't need proof from a court, Julian. This is the Volkov syndicate." Damian turned his head slightly toward me and nodded.
I gently knelt down beside Lila, unzipped her small pink backpack, and pulled out a heavy, secure flash drive that Damian had entrusted to me that morning—the digital ledger containing every single wire transfer Vance had made, downloaded directly from the office computer while Vance thought no one was looking.
Lila toddled forward, holding the flash drive out in her tiny palm.
She walked right up to the terrifying mafia boss who had once terrified a city, reached out, and dropped the flash drive into Damian’s open hand.
Damian caught it, looked down at her with a gentleness that defied human nature, and patted her head. Then, he slammed the flash drive down onto the table in front of the lead enforcer.
"Play it on the main screen," Damian ordered.
Within ten seconds, every offshore account, every signature, and every treasonous email from Julian Vance was splashed across the hundred-inch projector screen for every capo in the room to see.
The silence in the boardroom lasted three seconds.
Then, three capos stood up simultaneously, drawing their sidearms and pointing them directly at a hyperventilating Julian Vance.

"Take him to the basement," Damian commanded quietly.
Vance was dragged screaming from the room, his voice echoing down the hallway until the heavy doors clicked shut, sealing his fate.
