Chapter 1 - The Lockdown of Sterling Tower

The giant magnetic locks on the glass doors of Sterling Tower engaged with a heavy, metallic clank that echoed through the vast, marble lobby.

The bustling crowd of executives, lawyers, and security personnel froze mid-step. The receptionist’s sweet smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer confusion and rising panic.

"Mr. Sterling?" the receptionist stammered, her hand hovering over her desk phone. "I... I was just about to have security remove her. She was being uncooperative—"

"Be silent, Brenda," Robert Sterling commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed the absolute, crushing weight of a man accustomed to commanding thousands.

He didn't look at the receptionist. He didn't even look at the brown leather wallet still clutched tightly against my chest. His piercing, storm-blue eyes were locked onto the crumpled, pink piece of paper sticking out of the side pocket of my patched backpack.

I took a step back, my worn sneakers squeaking against the pristine marble. The two security guards who had been marching toward me stopped in their tracks, standing like statues at a single gesture from their boss.

Robert Sterling walked toward me. Up close, he was towering, dressed in a flawless charcoal suit with a silver watch that caught the golden lobby lights. But as he stopped a few feet away and knelt down to my eye level, I didn't see anger in his face.

I saw shock. I saw disbelief. And beneath it all, a deep, aching pain.

"Young lady," he said, his voice dropping to a gentle, quiet register. "That paper in your bag. Where did you get it?"

"It's... it's our eviction notice, sir," I whispered, my throat dry. "The landlord said we have to leave our apartment by Friday. That's why I... I almost kept the money. But my mom said doing the right thing matters. I wanted to give this back to you."

I held out the brown leather wallet with both hands, my fingers trembling.

Robert didn't take the wallet. Instead, his trembling fingers reached out toward the pink paper. He gently pulled it from my backpack and unfolded it.

I watched his eyes scan the document. He wasn't looking at the overdue rent amount. He was looking at the tenant name printed at the very top:

Clara Vance

A single, silent tear escaped the corner of Robert Sterling’s eye, tracing a path down his weathered cheek.

"Clara," he whispered, his voice cracking. He looked up at me, his gaze searching my face, tracing my eyes, my nose, the curl of my dark hair. "What is your name, sweetheart?"

"Sophie," I said quietly. "Sophie Vance."

Robert closed his eyes, a ragged breath escaping his chest. When he opened them, they shone with a fierce, protective light. He stood up, turning toward his head of security.

"Thomas," Robert ordered, his voice ringing through the silent lobby. "Get my personal medical team here immediately. And call my legal counsel, Marcus. Tell him to halt all foreclosure proceedings on the Rosewood Avenue apartments. If the landlord so much as breathes near Clara Vance's door, I want him ruined by nightfall."

"Right away, Mr. Sterling," Thomas replied, already dialing on his radio.

The receptionist, Brenda, stepped forward, her face pale. "Mr. Sterling, I don't understand. Who is this girl?"

Robert Sterling looked at Brenda, his expression turning to stone.

"This girl," he said, "is my granddaughter."
