Chapter 3 - The Scramble for Survival

"That's a lie," Jessica shrieked, breaking the paralysis that had gripped the room. She stood up, her face twisted in denial. "She's bluffing, Brendan! Look at her! She's wearing a twenty-dollar dress from a department store sale rack! She’s just trying to scare us because she's bitter about the divorce!"

None of the Sterlings joined in her denial.

Brendan was staring at the titanium keycard on the table as if it were a venomous snake. He remembered the prenup he had forced Cassidy to sign—or rather, the clever document she had had his own legal team draft, cleverly ensuring that while he walked away with his nominal salary, all underlying corporate liabilities remained attached to the Sterling family name.

At the time, he thought he was protecting his assets from a gold-digger. Now he realized he had handed the executioner the axe and begged her to tie the knot.

Suddenly, Harold’s cell phone—lying beside his plate—began to ring violently.

It wasn't a standard ringtone. It was the priority alert tone reserved exclusively for board members and senior banking executives.

Harold snatched the phone off the table with trembling fingers, swiping the screen. "Hello? This is Harold Sterling—"

"Harold! What the hell is going on?!" A panicked voice boomed through the speakerphone, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. It was Arthur Vance, Senior Managing Director of Sterling Global's primary credit line. "Our revolving credit facility has just been recalled in full! Twenty million dollars due within the hour, or the clearinghouse initiates immediate bankruptcy liquidation!"

Harold’s knees buckled. He grabbed the back of his chair to steady himself. "Arthur, listen to me, there’s been a clerical error—"

"There is no error!" Arthur shouted back, coughing in panic. "The Vanguard legal team just executed a hostile asset seizure clause! They’re locking down the entire corporate campus! Security guards are clearing out our executive suites as we speak!"

The call disconnected with a sharp beep.

Before Harold could even draw another breath, his phone rang again. Then Brendan’s phone started vibrating. Then the landline in the hallway began to ring relentlessly.

The entire family empire was unravelling in real-time, dismantled by a single phone call made from a dining room table while water dripped onto a Persian rug.

Diane finally broke. All her haughty arrogance vanished, replaced by a desperate, pathetic terror. She scrambled out of her chair, stumbling around the table until she collapsed onto her knees directly in front of Cassidy.

"Cassidy... sweetie... please," Diane choked out, her manicured hands reaching out to grab the hem of Cassidy’s soaked dress, though she stopped herself before touching it, remembering the water. "Listen to me. It was a joke. It was just a family joke! You know how your mother-in-law—your former mother-in-law—likes to tease! We didn't mean anything by it!"

Cassidy looked down at the woman who had spent the last three years treating her like dirt, smiling as she poured filthy water over her head.

"You said I needed a bath, Diane," Cassidy replied softly. "I'm just cleaning house."

Brendan rushed forward, falling to his knees beside his mother. All the color had drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly and hollow.

"Cass, please," Brendan begged, his voice cracking with humiliation as he looked up at his ex-wife. "Drop the protocol. Whatever you want—the settlement terms, the penthouse, the trust funds—you can have it all. Just... don't destroy my father’s company. We’ll lose everything. We’ll be ruined."

"Your father taught you that people without money are nothing," Cassidy said, her voice hardening slightly as she looked down at the man who had broken her heart before he ever realized her true worth. "He taught you that cruelty is a virtue as long as you're wearing an expensive suit. You built your entire lives on sand, Brendan. I didn't destroy your empire. I simply stopped pretending it was solid."
