Chapter 5 - Tearing Down the Illusion

Nathaniel took two steps toward the staircase, but Julian Vance lunged forward, placing himself directly between Nathaniel and the steps.

"Nathaniel, wait!" Julian pleaded frantically, sweat pouring down his forehead, soaking his expensive collar. "Don't listen to her! She's... she's an impostor! She's a con artist who changed her name to fool people! Evelyn died twelve years ago in Oregon! I showed you the death certificate!"

Nathaniel stopped. He looked at Julian with an expression of such icy, absolute contempt that Julian instinctively took a step back.

"Arthur," Nathaniel said quietly without looking away from Julian.

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase.

"Julian Vance," Arthur announced loudly so the entire courtyard could hear, "as of 3:15 PM today, a state judge has signed an emergency injunction freezing all bank accounts, trusts, and corporate entities associated with your name. Furthermore, the Oregon State Police have reopened the investigation into the falsified medical records from twelve years ago."

Julian gasped, staggering backward. "You... you can't do this! I am the administrator of the Graves Trust!"

"You were the administrator," Nathaniel corrected, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "Until I discovered that you stole millions from my company, forged my daughter's death certificate, and used my money to keep my child and grandchild trapped in poverty while you played the benevolent landlord."

Two uniformed police officers, who had arrived behind the security convoy, stepped forward into the courtyard, their hands resting on their utility belts.

"Julian Vance," the lead officer declared, "you are under arrest for grand larceny, forgery, and systematic extortion. Hands behind your back."

"No! This is a mistake! Nathaniel, listen to me!" Julian screamed as the metal handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "I did it for the family! She abandoned us for a nobody! I was protecting your legacy!"

"You didn't protect my legacy," Nathaniel said coldly as the officers dragged the kicking, screaming man toward a police cruiser. "You ruined my life. But today, it ends."

The crowd cheered as Julian was shoved into the back of the police car and driven away.

Nathaniel turned away from the commotion and slowly walked up the creaky wooden stairs leading to the second-floor balcony. I walked closely beside him, holding his hand.

My mother stood at the top of the stairs, trembling, unable to move, tears streaming down her face.

When Nathaniel reached the top step, he stopped. The grand billionaire, who had built a corporate empire, looked completely humbled before his daughter.

"Evelyn..." Nathaniel choked out, tears streaming into his gray beard. "My sweet girl... I am so, so sorry. I was blind. I was foolish. Can you ever forgive me?"

My mom let out a sob, stepping forward and throwing her arms around her father's neck.

Nathaniel wrapped his arms tightly around her, holding her against his chest as if he would never let her go again, weeping openly on the open balcony.

"I thought you hated me, Dad," she cried into his shoulder. "I thought you never wanted to see me again..."

"Never," Nathaniel wept, kissing her forehead over and over. "I looked for you every single day in my heart. You are my daughter. You are my home."

He pulled back gently, taking my small hand and placing it inside my mother's hand.

"And you raised the most remarkable, honest girl in the entire world," Nathaniel said, looking down at me with immense pride. "She saved us both, Evelyn. She brought us back together."

My mom knelt down, pulling me into a fierce, warm hug, kissing my face repeatedly. "Oh, Ruby... my sweet, brilliant girl..."

"I returned his wallet, Mom," I whispered softly into her neck, a bright smile spreading across my face. "Just like you taught me."
