Chapter 4 - The Fall of Cameron Bennett

Within forty-eight hours of the deposition, the dominoes fell with brutal, unrelenting speed.

The hospital board issued an immediate, dishonorable termination for both Dr. Cameron Bennett and Intern Sophie. Furthermore, the state medical board suspended Cameron’s license indefinitely pending a full criminal investigation for reckless endangerment and medical malpractice.

The news hit the local medical community like a tidal wave. Cameron’s once-prestigious reputation was completely obliterated. The man who used to stroll through the hospital corridors like a god was now a pariah, unable to secure even a locum tenancy at a rural walk-in clinic.

I returned to work three weeks later.

Walking back into the Emergency Department was like stepping onto a battlefield I had already conquered. The nurses cheered when I walked through the sliding glass doors; the trauma residents stood a little straighter; Marcus handed me a fresh cup of dark roast coffee with a subtle, proud grin.

"How's the little guy?" Marcus asked as we walked toward the trauma bays.

"Alexander is gaining weight," I smiled, a genuine, warm expression finally gracing my face. "He's taking his bottles like a champ. The pediatrician says there's no permanent lung damage from the fluid aspiration."

"And how are you?" Marcus asked, his tone softening, looking at me with deep concern.

"I'm alive, Marcus," I said quietly. "And for the first time in seven years, I'm clear-headed."

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I pulled it out to see a frantic string of text messages from Cameron, followed by a voicemail notification. He had been calling from different burnphones every day, begging, pleading, and demanding to see Alexander.

I deleted the messages without reading them and stepped into the trauma bay to evaluate an influx of patients from a highway collision.

Meanwhile, across town, Cameron was rotting in a cheap, rented motel room.

The polished, impeccably groomed doctor was gone. In his place sat a man with greasy hair, unwashed clothes, and empty bottles of scotch littered across the carpet. His bank accounts had been frozen due to the pending divorce and emergency alimony petitions filed by my legal team.

His phone rang. It was his lead defense attorney, Arthur Vance—Marcus’s estranged elder brother, whom Cameron had hired out of pure desperation.

"Arthur," Cameron croaked into the receiver. "Tell me you have good news. Can I get visitation rights for Alexander?"

"Cameron, listen to me very carefully," Arthur’s sharp voice came through the speaker. "The District Attorney just upgraded the charges. They are filing felony counts of reckless endangerment and third-degree assault. Amelia's legal team submitted the audio recordings from the delivery room monitors."

Cameron’s heart dropped into his stomach. "The... the room audio?"

"Yes," Arthur sighed heavily. "The room audio picked up everything. It recorded you explicitly ordering the nurses to turn off the epidural after she warned you about uterine rupture. It picked up her screaming in pain while you mocked her. It picked up you telling the nurses you would 'take responsibility' if anything happened. You are completely defenseless, Cameron."

"No... no, there has to be a way out!" Cameron screamed, kicking an empty bottle across the room, smashing it against the wall. "She's my wife! She can't testify against me!"

"Spousal privilege doesn't apply when the crime is committed against the spouse, you idiot!" Arthur snapped. "My advice? Take whatever plea deal the DA offers you, accept the loss of your license, and sign the divorce papers giving her full custody. If you fight this in court, you will spend the next ten years in a state penitentiary."

The line went dead.

Cameron slumped onto the edge of the saggy bed, clutching his head in his hands. He looked at the framed photo sitting on the nightstand—a picture taken three years ago on a beach in Maui. Amelia was laughing, her hands wrapped around his neck, looking at him as if he hung the stars in the sky.

He had possessed everything: a brilliant career, immense wealth, a beautiful, fiercely loyal wife, and a bright future. And he had traded it all away for a petty ego trip, a flattering lie from an intern, and a disgusting need to dominate a woman who was better at medicine than he would ever be.

Tears of bitter, pathetic self-pity streamed down his cheeks. He reached for his jacket, grabbing his car keys. He couldn't accept it. He needed to see her. He needed to make her look into his eyes and remember who they used to be.
