Chapter 6 - A Silent Promise

Six months later, the morning sun broke over the manicured gardens of the Duca estate.

The dark velvet curtains in my study were pulled wide, letting golden light pour across the mahogany desk. The constant ringing in my ears was completely gone. My hearing had restored to full clarity, the air crisp with the chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of cypress trees outside.

I stood on the patio, holding a warm cup of black coffee.

Across the green lawn, Lily was running through the grass in a bright yellow sundress, chasing a golden retriever puppy I had bought her for her fourth birthday. Clara sat on a wooden bench nearby, reading a book in the warm sunlight, a peaceful smile on her face.

Lily caught sight of me standing on the terrace. She stopped, turned, and raised her small hands into the air, signing two quick, fluid motions: Thank you. Home.

I set my coffee cup down on the table and signed back the three words I had spent the last six months learning fluently: Safe. Always. Family.

Lily beamed, letting out a bright, melodious laugh that echoed across the quiet courtyard before turning to chase her puppy once again.

I leaned against the stone balustrade, taking a deep breath of the clear morning air. The world I lived in was filled with dangerous men, treacherous contracts, and poisonous lies. But as I watched the little girl playing under the golden sky, I knew that the strongest shield in my empire wasn't guns, iron gates, or money.

It was the quiet innocence of a child who saw through the dark—and the silent promise of a man who would protect her forever.
