Chapter 2 - The Architecture of a Lie

The hospital hallway seemed to tilt violently on its axis.

I looked from Julian’s smug, triumphant face to the hand resting on Natalie’s shoulder. She flinched under his touch, her eyes darting to the floor, her knuckles whitening as she gripped the twins' hands.

"Julian," I growled, the billionaire who had crushed corporate empires returning in an instant, my voice dropping into a lethal, low register. "Take your hand off her. Right now."

Julian let out a soft, mocking laugh, stepping in front of Natalie and the children, acting as a shield. "Or what, Lucas? You’ll launch a hostile takeover? You don't possess the leverage here. You haven't for a long time."

"Lucas, please," Natalie whispered, her voice cracking as she finally stepped out from behind Julian. Tears were tracking down her pale cheeks. "Don't do this here. Not in front of them."

"Are they mine, Natalie?" I demanded, ignoring Julian entirely. I took a step closer, my gray eyes locking onto hers, desperate, pleading, and drowning in four years of buried agony. "Tell me the truth. The twins. Are they mine?"

"They’re my children legally, Lucas," Julian interrupted, his smile widening into something genuinely sinister. "Adopted through a private agency four years ago after your tragic, sudden divorce. Natalie was broke, broken, and completely abandoned by the great Lucas Carter. I provided the sanctuary you refused to give her."

"You shut up!" I roared, my fist clenching so hard I thought my skin would split.

"Lucas!" a new voice echoed through the hallway.

I turned to see my personal attorney and lifelong friend, Marcus, rushing down the corridor, his face grim. He didn't look at Julian or Natalie; he walked straight to me, grabbing my arm and pulling me back a few feet.

"Lucas, we need to leave. Now," Marcus whispered urgently, his eyes darting to the twins, who were watching the confrontation with wide, terrified eyes. "I just got a call from the clinic in New York. The forensic audit of your old medical records—the ones from your marriage with Natalie—just cleared."

I frowned, the confusion cutting through my rage. "What are you talking about, Marcus?"

Marcus swallowed hard, his voice dropping so low I could barely hear it over the hospital's ambient noise. "Five years ago, when you and Natalie were going to those fertility clinics in Chicago... your records were altered, Lucas. Someone paid the chief embryologist to falsify your sperm count reports. They made you believe you were completely sterile so you would blame Natalie and walk away from the marriage."

My blood ran instantly cold. I looked past Marcus, my gaze landing on Julian, who was casually checking his gold watch, completely unbothered by the storm brewing around us.

"Julian," I breathed, the horrific realization settling into my chest. "He did it."

"Not just Julian, Lucas," Marcus said, his voice laced with profound pity. "The offshore bank accounts used to pay off the medical staff... the secondary signature on the authorizations belonged to a private trust. A trust owned by your mother, Victoria Carter."
