Chapter 3 - The Forensic Strike

Patricia’s phone vibrated violently in her Chanel bag before she could even process my words. A second later, her personal assistant’s frantic voice echoed through the speaker as she answered it on speakerphone.
"M-Mrs. Mercer! You need to get to the corporate office right now!" the assistant screamed, her voice bordering on hyperventilation. "The federal authorities... the FBI and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division just walked into the building with a federal seizure warrant! They’re locking down the servers! They’re naming you and Brandon as primary co-conspirators in a forty-million-dollar charitable embezzlement scheme!"
Patricia dropped her phone onto the hospital floor, the screen cracking against the linoleum. She stared at me, her flawless composure shattering into a look of pure, unadulterated terror.
"What... what did you do?" she whispered, her voice finally losing its aristocratic edge.
"Before Brandon forced me to quit my job, I was a senior forensic investigator for the federal government, Patricia," I said, leaning forward, ignoring the pain in my ribs. "Did you really think a woman who tracks international cartel money for a living wouldn't notice where your 'charity gala' funds were actually going?"
For four years, Brandon and Patricia had treated me like a decorative ornament, a pretty piece of furniture to display at fundraisers while they laundered money through the Mercer Children’s Foundation to fund their luxury real estate developments. They thought I was just a submissive, broken victim. They never realized that every time Brandon locked me in my home office after an assault, I was using that time to map out their entire illegal financial empire.
"Every wire transfer, every offshore account in the Caymans, every double-ledger system you and Brandon used to buy your Beverly Hills and Atlanta estates—I found it all," I said, pointing to the broken phone on the floor. "The micro-SD card containing the raw server data was delivered to the authorities the moment Brandon was booked into jail last night. You didn't just lose your son to a domestic violence charge, Patricia. You just lost your entire company."
"You're a monster," Patricia breathed, her hands shaking as she backed away from my bed, looking at me as if I were a ghost.
"No, I’m an auditor," I corrected coldly. "And your accounts are completely frozen."
Before she could say another word, the hospital door opened, and two federal agents in sharp suits stepped into the room, accompanied by an Atlanta police detective.

"Patricia Mercer?" the lead agent asked, producing an official warrant. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Please step away from the patient and put your hands behind your back."
As the handcuffs clicked around Patricia’s wrists, the great matriarch of Atlanta high society was led out of my room, sobbing hysterically as the hospital staff watched in absolute shock. The shield of wealth and influence they had used to shatter me behind closed doors had just been turned into a cage.
