Chapter 2 - THE AMBUSH AT JFK

The wheels of the private charter hit the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport with a sharp screech of rubber against wet concrete.

Rain was pouring down in heavy sheets, blurring the yellow airport lights into smeared halos against the night.

Inside the cabin, nobody moved until the engines whined down to a low, quiet hum. Lila was fast asleep in my lap, wrapped securely in my heavy cashmere overcoat, her head resting against my chest, her thumb tucked lightly into her mouth.

I hadn't let go of her since the plane stabilized.

Clara stood in the aisle, clutching her handbag, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen. She looked terrified—not of me, but of what lay beyond the glass windows of the terminal.

"Luca," Clara said softly, her voice trembling. "You can't take us to your house. You don't understand... they know we're on this flight."

I stood up slowly, keeping Lila cradled against my chest like the most precious diamond in the world. "Who knows, Clara? Speak clearly. The games end tonight."

"Julian Ross," Clara whispered, the name sending a cold, electric shock through my spine.

Julian Ross. My former business partner turned bitter, blood-thirsty rival. Two years ago, Ross had tried to take over my real estate portfolio in Queens through illegal union extortion and arson. When I crushed his syndicate and sent his brother to federal prison, Ross disappeared into the shadows of the European underworld.

"Julian found us in London three weeks ago," Clara sobbed quietly, stepping closer to me in the narrow aisle. "He figured out who Lila was. He threatened to kill her if I didn't come back to New York and sign over the land deeds your father left in my name before he died!"

My jaw clenched so tight the muscles twitched under my skin. "My father left you land deeds?"

"The waterfront property in Red Hook," Clara explained rapidly. "Your father knew Julian was dirty. Before your father passed, he gave me the power of attorney over those plots so Julian could never touch them. He told me to hide... to protect the child."

The full, horrifying truth hit me like a sledgehammer.

My father hadn't died of natural causes six years ago. He had known Julian Ross was coming for the family empire. He had sent Clara away with my unborn child to keep them safe from the war he knew was coming.

Clara hadn't abandoned me. She had been sent into exile to keep my daughter alive.

"And you carried this alone for six years?" I asked, my voice cracking with overwhelming guilt and love.

"I had to," Clara whispered, reaching out to touch my arm. "I couldn't let you risk your life for us before you were strong enough to win."

Before I could answer, the front door of the jet hissed open, letting in a gust of freezing, rain-soaked air.

Marcus, my chief of security—a scarred former Royal Marine who had served me for ten years—stepped onto the threshold, his face grim under his black raincoat.

"Boss," Marcus said sharply, his hand resting inside his suit jacket. "We have a situation on the tarmac. Two black SUVs just bypassed port security. They’re blocking our escort motorcade."

I looked down at my sleeping daughter, then at Clara.

The cold, ruthless monster I had kept buried inside my soul for six years woke up instantly.

"Marcus," I growled, my tone dropping into a quiet, deadly register. "How many men?"

"Eight," Marcus replied. "Armed."

"Take Clara and Lila through the rear service staircase into the armored sedan," I ordered, handing my coat and my daughter gently into Clara’s arms. "I will handle the reception committee."

"Luca, no!" Clara gasped, clutching Lila against her chest. "They're dangerous!"

May you like

I turned to look at Clara, my eyes cold as ice, but my voice filled with an absolute, unbreakable promise.

"They brought a war to my daughter, Clara," I said softly, stepping toward the open door into the pouring rain. "Now I'm going to finish it."
