Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS

The following week, the dismantling of the Vance empire played out across every major news network in the country.
Federal investigators raided the corporate headquarters, seizing millions in hidden assets, unearthing dozens of fraudulent land grabs across rural Ohio, and arresting every corrupt executive and local co-conspirator involved.
In Silver Creek, the fallout was swift and absolute.
Teresa and Derek Halstead were formally charged with second-degree murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy, sitting behind bars in the county jail with no possibility of bail. Aunt Beatrice’s funeral home was seized by the state as part of the criminal forfeiture proceedings, her license permanently revoked.
The community of Silver Creek, once terrified of the Halstead family's local influence and Vance's corporate intimidation, rallied around Alex and Lily. Neighbors brought food, local church groups offered support, and the county court officially restored Clara’s name, clearing her of any false allegations of instability and officially invalidating the fraudulent property deeds.
On a crisp Saturday morning, exactly two weeks after he had returned home to find funeral wreaths on his gate, Alex stood on the front porch of his home.
The mourning ribbons had been taken down. In their place, bright yellow marigolds—Clara’s favorite flowers—swayed gently in the autumn breeze.
Inside the living room, six-year-old Lily sat on the rug, laughing as she played with her new doll, completely safe and surrounded by the warmth of a home that had finally been purged of its darkness.
Alex held a small, framed photograph of Clara in his hands. Her bright, gentle smile beamed back at him, unburdened by fear.
“We won, sweetheart,” Alex whispered to the wind, a tear slipping down his cheek—not of sorrow, but of profound, hard-won peace.
