Chapter 3 - The Secret Weapon

By 8:00 AM the next morning, Marcus arrived at the cabin carrying two large cups of black coffee and a thick manila folder. Lily was still asleep in the loft, buried under three thick down comforters, safe and warm.
"How is our little warrior?" Marcus asked, handing me a coffee.
"Sleeping. Her fever broke around dawn," I said, taking a grateful sip. "Let’s get to it, Marcus. What do we have?"
Marcus laid the folder on the wooden dining table. "First, the house. Ryan thinks he has leverage because his name is on the deed. But he forgets who negotiated the financing. You bought that property using your family inheritance as the down payment—nearly eighty percent of the home's total value. More importantly, the trust your grandfather set up explicitly states that any real estate purchased with those funds remains your sole, non-marital property in the event of a divorce. He’s a tenant, Sarah. He just doesn't know it yet."
I looked at the legal documents. For years, I had let Ryan handle the household accounts because my deployments kept me overseas or in the field. I had trusted him blindly.
"And the accounts?" I asked.
Marcus sighed, opening a spreadsheet. "This is where it gets ugly. Over the last six months, while you were deployed, Ryan has cleared out your joint savings. Nearly eighty-thousand dollars. He’s been wiring it to an LLC registered under the name 'Tiffany Vance.' A quick background check reveals she’s a local interior designer. Or, more accurately, she's the woman you saw hanging the star on your tree last night."
My chest tightened, but I didn't let the tears fall. "He used my deployment money—money I earned while eating dust in the desert, away from my daughter—to fund his mistress's business?"
"Yes. And he’s been telling her the house is his. In fact, we found public social media posts from Tiffany boasting about her 'new fixer-upper' and how she can't wait to redecorate 'their' family home for the holidays."
A cold smile spread across my face. "She wants a fixer-upper? I’m about to give her a demolition."

"What's the plan, Captain?" Marcus asked, a dangerous spark in his eyes.
"Ryan still thinks I land at 3:00 PM today. He expects me to call him from the airport for a ride. I’m not going to call. I’m going to show up. But I’m not going alone. I want a sheriff’s deputy, a locksmith, and a moving truck. If he wants to play house, he can do it in an empty yard."
