Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The 45th-floor boardroom of Vance Global looked out over a gray, fog-shrouded San Francisco Bay.

Around the long mahogany conference table sat twelve members of the board of directors. On the left sat Victoria Lane, wearing a pristine white suit that screamed power and triumph, flanked by three corporate lawyers carrying thick black binders.

At the head of the table sat Jonathan Vance.

He didn't look like a man about to lose his empire. He looked like an executioner waiting for the trapdoor to drop.

I stood quietly in the corner of the room, wearing a sharply tailored black pantsuit Jonathan had had delivered to my guest suite at 5:00 AM, holding a secure tablet linked to the estate’s private security servers.

"We have reviewed the emergency motion for a leadership spill," Chairman Thomas Henderson announced, adjusting his glasses and looking uncomfortably at Jonathan. "Given the stagnation of our European expansion, combined with persistent media inquiries regarding Mr. Vance's domestic availability... the executive committee has prepared a vote of no confidence."

Victoria leaned forward, her red lips curving into a predatory smile.

"It’s unfortunate it had to come to this, Jonathan," Victoria said smoothly, pitching her voice for maximum theatrical impact in front of the board. "We all sympathized with your personal tragedy two years ago when poor Elena and the boy... well, when the accident happened. But a multi-national tech conglomerate cannot be run by a ghost. You've neglected your duties. You've hoarded yourself in that estate. And quite frankly, the board believes your judgment is severely compromised."

"Compromised," Jonathan repeated, his voice dangerously smooth. He didn't raise his voice. He simply pressed a button on his remote control.

The massive smart-screen behind the board members flickered to life.

Instead of quarterly revenue projections, the screen displayed a high-resolution, timestamped bank transfer record.

Recipient: Offshore Holding LLC (Cayman Islands). Sender: Victoria Lane. Amount: $1.2 million. Purpose: Retainer for corporate espionage and obstruction of justice.

Gasps erupted around the table. Victoria’s triumphant smile shattered instantly, her face turning chalk-white as she whipped her head around to stare at the screen.

"What... what is this?!" Victoria stammered, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the parquet floor. "This is a crude fabrication! Deepfake documents! Jonathan is having a mental breakdown, he's projecting his own incompetence—"

"Sit down, Victoria," Jonathan commanded.

He pressed a second button.

Audio began to play through the boardroom surround-sound system. It was a crystal-clear recording of a phone call made at 1:15 AM from the parking garage beneath Vance Global headquarters.

Voice 1 (Victoria): "...if the kid starts talking again, the whole narrative falls apart! The police report from two years ago gets reopened! I didn't pay you off to leave loose ends!" Voice 2 (Unidentified male): "Relax, Ms. Lane. The brakes on her SUV were just a warning test. If the kid remembers anything about who was tampering with the vehicle that night... well, kids have accidents all the time, don't they?"

The boardroom fell into a tomb-like silence. Every single director turned their head slowly from the screen to look at Victoria, who was now trembling so violently she had to grip the edge of the table to stay upright.

"You... you tapped my phone?" Victoria whispered, horror dawning in her eyes.

"I didn't," Jonathan stood up, leaning forward over the table, his icy blue eyes locked onto hers with lethal precision. "My new head of household security did while you were busy trying to bribe her with fifty grand in cash last night."

Jonathan turned his gaze to the stunned chairman of the board.

"Mr. Henderson," Jonathan said evenly. "I move for the immediate termination of Victoria Lane from the board of directors, forfeiture of all voting shares under our morals and criminal liability clause, and an immediate referral of these audio files to the District Attorney's office for attempted corporate extortion and conspiracy to commit murder."

Before the chairman could even nod, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two federal marshals in dark suits stepped into the room, flanked by Captain James Miller of the San Francisco Police Department.

"Victoria Lane?" Captain Miller asked, stepping up to her chair and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You're under arrest for the 2024 tampering of an operating vehicle resulting in manslaughter, and ongoing corporate racketeering. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
