Chapter 4 - The House Comes Crashing Down

The raid on Vanguard Holdings was the lead story on the evening news. Aerial footage showed federal agents carrying boxes of documents out of the glass tower downtown, while local reporters stood outside Margaret’s suburban estate, capturing the chaos as her luxury vehicles were towed away as part of an asset forfeiture seizure.

The Facebook page that Margaret had used to defame my daughter had become her own public pillory. Tens of thousands of comments flooded her profile, demanding her arrest, calling out her hypocrisy, and turning her pearl-wearing facade into a viral meme of corporate greed and cruelty.

Claire sat at the kitchen table, watching the broadcast. The swelling on her face had gone down, but the sorrow in her eyes was permanent. Still, as she watched Ethan’s brother Julian being led out of the corporate office in handcuffs, a spark of life returned to her expression.

“He’s going to turn on Ethan, isn't he?” Claire asked quietly.

“Julian is a coward,” I said, pouring her a cup of chamomile tea. “In a fraud scheme like this, the younger brother always breaks first. He’ll take a plea deal within forty-eight hours to avoid maximum prison time, and he’ll give the prosecutors Ethan and Margaret on a silver platter.”

Right on cue, my doorbell rang. This time, it wasn't a threat.

Standing on my porch was Detective Marcus Vance—the same honest detective from the local precinct who had refused to let the Vaughn family bury Claire’s assault report. He held a thick legal folder.

“Evelyn,” Vance said, stepping inside and tipping his hat to Claire. “Julian just cracked. He admitted to the siphoning, but more importantly, he gave us the security footage from the Vaughn mansion’s internal garage and basement hallway from two nights ago.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “And?”

Vance pulled out a tablet and pressed play. The video showed Claire running toward the basement door, trying to escape. It showed Ethan chasing her, grabbing her by the hair, and deliberately shoving her down the wooden stairs. The audio was crystal clear. You could hear Margaret’s voice from the living room shouting, “Make sure she doesn't leave this house with those documents, Ethan!”

Claire looked away, tears streaming down her face as the trauma replayed on the small screen. I wrapped my arm tightly around her, my jaw clenching so hard my teeth ached.

“It’s first-degree domestic assault, attempted murder, and corporate conspiracy,” Vance said, shutting off the tablet. “The District Attorney just upgraded the charges. We have an arrest warrant for Ethan and an accessory warrant for Margaret. They’re currently barricaded inside their mansion with their high-priced lawyers, but the SWAT team is moving in within the hour.”

“Let them run,” I whispered, a dark, righteous satisfaction washing over me. “There isn't a bank account left in this country that can fund their escape.”
