Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The hospital room became a battlefield of whispers and heavy security within twenty minutes. Because of Eleanor’s prominent status in the Chicago elite, the hospital administration tried to handle the situation quietly, moving me and my baby to a secure, private luxury suite in the VIP wing. Dr. Miller refused to leave my side, acting both as my medical provider and a guardian shield.

Jason and Eleanor had been escorted to a private conference room down the hall by hospital security and two arriving detectives from the Chicago Police Department. They weren't under arrest yet—Eleanor's lawyers were already flooding the building—but the wheels of justice had finally started turning.

“Vivian,” Dr. Miller said softly, sitting in the armchair beside my bed. He had checked my vitals and ensured my son, whom I had quietly named Leo, was perfectly healthy. “I owe you an apology. I never intended for my past to collide with your delivery, but when I saw your son's face... it was like looking into a mirror of my own infancy. The exact same birthmark behind the left ear. The exact same facial structure.”

“Dr. Miller—David,” I said, cradling Leo closely. “What did Eleanor do to you?”

David let out a long, ragged breath, staring at his hands. “Twenty-six years ago, I was a young, brilliant medical student. I fell in love with a woman Eleanor didn't approve of—a girl from a working-class family. I defied my mother, married her secretly, and she got pregnant. Eleanor threatened to cut me off entirely, but I didn't care. But during the delivery, right here in this hospital, my wife supposedly suffered a fatal hemorrhage. They told me the baby died too.”

He paused, a single tear escaping his eye. “Eleanor showed me the medical records, the signed cremation orders. I was so broken, so destroyed by grief, that I took a medical position in Africa and didn't return to Chicago for fifteen years. I rebuilt my life, specialized in difficult deliveries so no other man would lose his family the way I did. I never knew... I never suspected that Eleanor had falsified the records, hidden the baby, and raised him as her own 'miracle adopted heir' to keep the Vaughn family lineage alive after my father passed away.”

“Jason is your son,” I breathed, the sheer horror of Eleanor’s malice chilling me to the bone. “She stole your baby, lied to you, and raised him to be a puppet to inherit the family empire.”

“Yes,” David said, his jaw tightening. “And she turned him into a monster just like her. But what they don't know is that the Vaughn family trust is legally bound by bloodline. If Jason is proven to be my son, and I am the rightful biological heir who was defrauded, every single asset Eleanor and Jason control is legally void. They are living on stolen time, and stolen money.”

I leaned back against the pillows, a slow, cold smile spreading across my lips. The exhaustion was gone, replaced by the sharp, analytical mind of the contract auditor I used to be.

“They don't know about the mattress, David,” I said quietly.

“The mattress?”

“Before Jason threw the divorce papers at me, I spent months tracking his financial movements. I knew he was hiding money, but I didn't understand why the numbers looked so erratic. Now it makes sense. Eleanor and Jason have been desperately shifting millions of dollars out of the Vaughn family trust into offshore shell companies in Panama and the Cayman Islands over the last year.”

I reached into my hospital bag, pulling out a encrypted flash drive I had smuggled in with my personal belongings. “They knew you were back in Chicago, David. They knew you had taken a senior position at this hospital. They were terrified you would find out the truth, so they were planning to liquidate the entire family estate and flee the country before the fraud was exposed. That's why Jason needed to get rid of me so quickly. I was looking too closely at the books.”

David looked at the flash drive, a spark of hope igniting in his eyes. “Can you prove the transfers?”

“I have every transaction ID, every forged signature Eleanor used to bypass the trust’s trustees, and every email where Jason explicitly states they need to 'starve Vivian out' so I wouldn't have the financial resources to hire a lawyer during the divorce.”

Right on cue, my phone on the bedside table buzzed violently. It was a notification from Facebook.

During my months of cleaning offices and folding towels, I had kept a completely silent profile. But Jason’s high-society friends hadn't. A prominent Chicago gossip page had just posted a blind item: “Spotted: Real estate royalty causing a massive scene in the VIP maternity ward. Is the estranged wife using a surprise baby to demand a bigger divorce settlement?”

The comments were already filled with venom, calling me a gold-digger and a fraud.

“They’re trying to control the narrative,” I said, handing the flash drive to David. “They want to destroy my reputation before the truth comes out. Arthur Pendelton is my father’s old legal partner. Call him. Tell him the auditor has finished the report. It’s time to post the audit online.”
