Chapter 2 - The Viper's Trap

The morning after our wedding night, the atmosphere in the Vance mansion was suffocatingly tense. Word of our marriage had hit the local high-society blogs, fueled by anonymous tips from my own mother's social circle. The headlines were brutal: “Greenwich Billionaire Marries the Help: Corporate Heir Trapped by Housekeeper's Scandalous Past.”

I sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table, my laptop open to a series of plummeting stock charts. The board of directors was panicked. In the world of high finance, perception was everything, and the narrative that the CEO of Vance Global had been manipulated by a "loose woman" was damaging our upcoming public offering.

The heavy double doors of the dining room swung open, and my mother, Eleanor Vance, stepped inside. She was draped in Chanel, her diamonds catching the morning light, her face a mask of cold, aristocratic fury. Behind her walked Victoria Sterling, the daughter of an oil tycoon and the woman my mother had spent the last five years trying to force me to marry.

"Nathan," Eleanor said, her voice dropping like an icicle onto the marble floor. "I hope you’ve enjoyed your little fantasy, because reality has officially arrived. The board is calling an emergency meeting. Your father’s legacy is being dragged through the gutter because you couldn't keep your hands off the maid."

I closed my laptop with a sharp snap. "Mother, I suggest you watch your tone. Emily is my wife. She is the mistress of this house now."

Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh, stepping forward. "Oh, Nathan, darling. She's not a mistress; she's an opportunist. Do you really think we don’t know about her little setup? We did some digging into her background in West Virginia. The girl has been funneling thousands of dollars a month out of state. Three different names on her bank transfer receipts. She’s bleeding you dry before the ink on the marriage certificate is even dry!"

At that moment, Emily entered the dining room. She was dressed simply, looking pale but composed. The moment she saw Eleanor and Victoria, she froze, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the back of a chair.

"Speak of the devil," Eleanor sneered, turning her icy gaze onto Emily. "Tell me, Emily, how does it feel? To go from scrubbing my floors to sitting at my table? Did you think a ring would make us forget who you are? A girl from the trailer parks with a trail of broken men behind her?"

"Mother, that's enough!" I slammed my hand on the table, standing up.

"No, Nathan, let her speak," Victoria chimed in, a vicious smile playing on her lips. "Let’s see if she has the courage to deny it. We know about Johnny, Paul, and Lily. We know you’re using Nathan’s money to support them. Tell us, Emily, which one of them belongs to the truck driver you were seeing before you crawled your way up here?"

I watched Emily’s face drain of all color. I was about to intervene, to unleash the truth and crush them both, but Emily caught my eye. She gave me a subtle, pleading shake of her head. She didn't want me to defend her. Not yet. She wanted to see just how far they would go.

"I have never used a single dollar of Nathan’s money," Emily said, her voice remarkably steady despite the tremor in her hands. "Every penny I sent home was earned through my own hard labor. I worked sixteen-hour shifts in this house, cleaning up after people who didn't even look me in the eye."

Eleanor stepped closer, her eyes narrowing into slits. "You think you're clever, don't you? You think because Nathan is blinded by your sob stories that the rest of the world will be too? Next Tuesday is the annual Vance Children's Foundation Gala. The entire elite of New York and Connecticut will be in this house. Governors, CEOs, journalists."

Eleanor leaned in, her breath smelling of expensive mints and venom. "I have invited the press, Emily. I have invited everyone. If you think you can hide in the shadows of this mansion, you are mistaken. You will stand by Nathan's side as his 'wife,' and we will see how well your little secret holds up under the bright lights of a media circus. By the end of that night, everyone will know exactly what kind of woman you are, and Nathan will have no choice but to throw you out to save his company."

"Is that a threat, Mrs. Vance?" Emily asked quietly.

"It's a promise, darling," Victoria whispered maliciously. "Enjoy your week as a billionaire's wife. Because next Tuesday, the fairy tale ends."

They turned on their heels and swept out of the room, leaving a suffocating silence in their wake.

I rushed over to Emily, pulling her into my arms. "We don't have to do this, Emily. I can cancel the gala. I can fire the entire board. I don't care about the company if it means putting you through this torture."

Emily pulled back, looking into my eyes. For the first time, I didn't see fear in her expression. I saw the fierce, unbreakable spirit of a woman who had survived the loss of her brothers and the slow fading of her sister.

"No, Nathan," she said, a dangerous spark igniting in her green eyes. "Don't cancel it. Let them throw their gala. Let them invite the press. My brothers died protecting people. They died with honor. If your mother wants to use their memory to destroy me, she is going to learn exactly what happens when you push a desperate woman too far."
