Chapter 5 - The Glass Tower Takeover

At 8:45 AM, the lobby of Vexley Plaza was packed with reporters, their flashbulbs reflecting off the towering glass atrium. The news of my "disappearance" had brought out every financial journalist in the tri-state area.
When the private elevator opened, I didn't walk out alone.
Sylvie walked beside me, her posture perfect, her arm linked securely through mine. Behind us, Marcus pushed a double stroller covered in bulletproof ballistic silk, surrounded by a wall of private security officers.
I stepped up to the podium, ignoring the shouting voices of the press.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing through the massive marble lobby. "There have been rumors circulating regarding the leadership of Vexley International and my personal life. I am here to clarify the situation."
I reached down and took Sylvie’s hand, lifting it so the cameras could see. "Seven months ago, my wife and I went through a difficult period, orchestrated largely by external corporate pressures. Today, I am proud to announce that we have reconciled. More importantly, we are celebrating the birth of our twins, the sole heirs to the Vexley estate."
A roar of questions erupted from the crowd, but I raised my hand, cutting them off instantly.
"Furthermore," I continued, looking directly into the camera that I knew was broadcasting to the boardroom on the fiftieth floor, "as CEO and controlling shareholder, I am officially executing a strategic transfer of all proprietary synthesis data for our upcoming pharmaceutical line into a new, independent entity controlled entirely by my wife, Sylvie Vexley. Vexley International will no longer own these assets; we will license them from her, effective immediately."
The journalists went wild. The stock tickers on the wall instantly reacted, the red line flattening out and violently curving upward. By separating the technology from the corporate infighting, I had just made Sylvie the most powerful woman in the pharmaceutical industry—and rendered my mother’s custody claim completely toothless.
"Julian!" a voice shrieked from the back of the lobby.
The crowd parted to reveal Victoria Vexley. She was flanked by four high-priced corporate lawyers, her face a mask of aristocratic rage. She marched toward the podium, her heels clicking like gunfire.

"This is a circus!" Victoria yelled, stopping inches from me. "You cannot transfer corporate assets without a board vote! This is a violation of your fiduciary duty!"
"It would be a violation, Mother," I said smoothly, stepping out from behind the podium to stand directly in her path. "Except for one tiny detail you forgot to check when you drafted our divorce settlement seven months ago."
