Chapter 6 - Dawn over the Lake

The sun rose over Lake Michigan three days later, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and bruised purple.

From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse suite at Hargrove Memorial Hospital, the view of the city was breathtaking. Down below, the morning commuter traffic crawled across DuSable Lake Shore Drive like a trail of ants, completely unaware of the seismic shift that had reshaped the city’s underworld over the past seventy-two hours.

Salvatore Moretti was in a federal holding cell awaiting trial on a dozen racketeering counts. The Outfit had surrendered the North Side docks without firing another shot. And my old life as a broke, exhausted paramedic working double shifts on ambulance 42 felt like a lifetime ago.

“You’re staring at the horizon again,” a deep, familiar voice interrupted my thoughts.

I didn't turn around. I felt the warm, familiar pressure of arms sliding around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a solid, comforting chest.

“I’m just making sure the city is still there,” I murmured, leaning back into Adrian as he rested his chin gently on my shoulder.

“The city belongs to whoever is brave enough to hold it,” Adrian replied softly. “Or in your case, whoever is stubborn enough to stop on a sidewalk and save my mother’s life.”

I turned around in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck. “Your mother sent me a text five minutes ago. She’s demanding we come down to the estate for Sunday brunch, or she’s sending Vargas to drag us out of bed.”

Adrian chuckled, his arms tightening around my waist. “Mother adores you. She’s already redecorating the west wing suite to make it permanent.”

“Permanent?” I raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on my lips. “Mr. Hargrove, are you proposing a life sentence?”

Adrian’s expression softened, the cold, ruthless mafia boss melting away entirely, leaving only the man who had loved me through fire and blood.

“It’s not a sentence, Nora,” he whispered, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering devotion. “It’s a sanctuary. And I’m never letting you go.”

He leaned down, capturing my lips in a slow, deep kiss that tasted of morning coffee and absolute peace.

Outside, the cold Chicago wind whipped across the lake, but inside, wrapped in his arms, I knew I was finally safe. My ambulance days were over, my debt was paid, and the most dangerous man in the city was mine.
