Chapter 5 - The Battle for Beacon Hill

The Whitmore estate in Beacon Hill was a grand, historic four-story brick mansion surrounded by wrought-iron gates and towering gas lamps.

When our SUV pulled into the cobblestone driveway, three military police vehicles were already parked outside, their red lights reflecting off the wet brick walls.

Inside the grand library, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and heavy leather armchairs, sat Richard Whitmore.

Richard was a slick, silver-haired man in his late sixties, dressed in an expensive pinstripe suit. He sat on the sofa, clutching a glass of brandy, trying to act calm while two broad-shouldered Military Police officers stood over him like marble statues. On the table in front of him sat an open steel safe and a stack of legal folders.

When the heavy oak doors opened and Alexander walked in—carrying Eleanor in his arms and setting her gently into a large leather armchair—Richard nearly jumped out of his skin.

"Alexander!" Richard stammered, forcing a nervous chuckle as he stood up. "Thank God! They said your mother was missing! I came over as soon as I heard! I was just... securing her important documents from the safe in case—"

"Shut your mouth, Richard," Alexander said.

The command was so sharp, so absolute, that Richard instantly froze, his mouth hanging open.

Alexander walked slowly toward his uncle, stepping right up to the coffee table. He reached down, picked up the legal folders, and scanned them in seconds.

"Power of attorney documents," Alexander read coldly. "A fraudulent medical evaluation signed by a paid doctor in New York. And an application to freeze Eleanor Whitmore's bank accounts."

"Alexander, listen to me!" Richard pleaded, sweating profusely. "Your mother is old! She’s wandering the streets in thunderstorms! She’s losing her mind! I’m doing this to protect the family estate—"

"My mother is sharper than you will ever be, Uncle," Alexander spat out with total disgust. "And she didn't wander off because she was confused. She ran away because you hired thugs to intimidate her in her own home!"

"You have no proof of that!" Richard yelled, his arrogance flaring up. "I am her brother! I have a legal right to oversee this estate! You can't use your military ranks to intimidate me, Alexander! This is civilian law!"

"Then let's talk about civilian law, Richard," a calm voice spoke up from the doorway.

Sergeant Miller stepped into the room, holding a tablet connected to a speaker.

"Ten minutes ago," Miller reported, "the FBI financial crimes division executed a search warrant on Richard Whitmore's private investment firm in downtown Boston. They discovered two hundred million dollars in fraudulent offshore transfers, wire fraud, and illegal offshore gambling debts."

Richard’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the Persian rug. Brandy splashed across his expensive shoes.

"What... what did you say?" Richard whimpered, his face turning gray.

"You didn't want my mother's estate to protect her, Richard," Alexander said, leaning down until he was eye-to-eye with his uncle. "You needed her money to pay off the Russian mafia and cover up your illegal embezzlement before the SEC caught you."

Eleanor looked at her brother from her armchair, her honey-colored eyes filled with deep, heartbreaking pity.

"I offered to help you three years ago, Richard," Eleanor said quietly. "I would have given you whatever you needed if you had just been honest with me. But you tried to lock me away like an animal."

"Eleanor... please..." Richard dropped to his knees, sobbing hysterically. "Please don't do this! Tell them to drop the charges! I'm your brother!"

"Sergeant Miller," Alexander ordered, turning his back on his uncle. "Take him away. Ensure the FBI holds him without bail."

As the officers dragged the screaming, sobbing man out of the library, the grand mansion finally fell into absolute, peaceful silence.
