Chapter 2 - The Glass Wall

The silence that fell over the hallway was heavier than the marble floors.

David looked from me to the locked door, his face twisting in disgust. “Harper... what is in that room?”

“Open it,” Sarah hissed, stepping back against the wall as if the door itself carried a disease. “Harper, open it right now.”

I looked at Beatrice. The older woman’s face had lost all its color beneath her expensive powder. Her hands gripped her silk shawl so tightly her knuckles turned white. She knew. Somewhere deep inside her calculating, manipulative mind, she knew exactly whose voice had been whimpering behind that wood.

“You wouldn't,” Beatrice whispered, her voice trembling.

“Watch me,” I replied.

I slid the key into the lock.

The mechanism turned with a crisp, echoing click.

Before I could even push the door open, Julian threw his weight against it from the inside. The door flew back, slamming hard against the interior wall with a loud crash.

A wall of thick, humid steam rolled out into the hallway, smelling of artificial jasmine and sweat.

Standing in the doorway of the master bathroom was a sight no family gathering was ever prepared for. Julian stood wrapped in a single, oversized white bath towel wrapped loosely around his waist, his hair plastered to his forehead, his chest heaving. Behind him, huddled low in the deep, bubbling heart-shaped jacuzzi, was Mia.

She had pulled a bath sheet up to her chin, her dark eyes wide and terrified, tears carving clean tracks through the condensation on her cheeks.

For three seconds, nobody breathed.

Then David moved.

He didn't shout. He didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, grabbed his brother by the collar of his wet shoulders, and hurled Julian backward into the bathroom vanity with a sickening thud.

“You absolute piece of trash,” David roared, his fist drawing back.

“David, stop!” Julian screamed, raising his hands to shield his face, slipping slightly on the wet marble floor. “Stop, don't hit me!”

“You brought her here?” Beatrice shrieked, her voice breaking into a harsh, ugly crack as she pointed a shaking finger at Mia in the tub. “In this house? On your anniversary? Have you completely lost your mind?”

“Mom, it’s not—it’s just—let me explain—” Julian stammered, scrambling backward on the wet tiles, his towel slipping dangerously low.

“Explain what?!” Sarah yelled, her face red with fury. “We saw you! You’re standing half-naked in a jacuzzi with the maid while your wife stands out here looking like a queen! You pigs! Both of you!”

Mia began to cry louder, burying her face in her knees. “It wasn't like that! We didn't mean for this to happen! Sir Julian was just—we were just talking—”

“Shut your mouth,” I said.

The quiet authority in my voice cut through the shouting instantly.

Every head in the room turned to look at me. Julian looked up from the floor, his eyes wide with a desperate, pathetic plea.

“Harper,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “Harper, please. Let’s talk about this. Don’t do this in front of my family. Please. We can fix this. I love you.”

I laughed.

It was a cold, short sound that made Julian flinch harder than his brother’s fist would have.

“You love me?” I stepped forward, looking down at my husband sprawled on the bathroom floor like discarded trash. “Julian, you couldn't even wait until the anniversary dinner was over to crawl back to the girl your mother vetted for you. You used my house, my bathtub, my money, and my life to play house while I was out working to fund your lifestyle.”

Beatrice stepped up beside me, her expression hardening as she realized the social humiliation this was about to bring down upon her own head.

“You stupid, arrogant boy,” Beatrice hissed, glaring down at her son. “Do you have any idea what you’ve thrown away? Harper owns three spas! This house is in her name! Everything you have is because she handed it to you on a silver platter!”

Julian looked up at his mother with betrayal in his eyes. “Mom, you said yourself—you said she was too rigid, you said—”

“I said nothing of the kind!” Beatrice lied instantly, her voice rising shrilly. “Don't you dare put your filth on me! You brought a whore into your wife’s home and humiliated our entire family!”

“Oh, cut the performance, Beatrice,” I said smoothly, turning my gaze from my husband to my mother-in-law.

Beatrice stopped short, blinking. “What did you call me?”

I reached into the pocket of my dress, pulled out my phone, unlocked it with a single tap, and pressed play on a pre-loaded audio file.

The speakers of my phone filled the humid hallway with crystal-clear sound.

“Men get bored,” Beatrice’s recorded voice echoed off the marble walls, calm and chillingly practical. “Harper is capable, yes, but she’s rigid. Always business. Always control. I understand why you wanted softness... Keep her happy. Make her feel adored. Let her keep bringing money into this family. Mia can stay, but quietly...”

The color drained from Beatrice’s face so fast she looked like a corpse under fluorescent lights.

David stared at his mother in horror. “Mom? Is that... was that you?”

Beatrice’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. “That’s... that’s an AI generation! That’s fake! Harper edited that!”

“It’s not edited, Beatrice,” I said, slipping the phone back into my pocket. “The security camera in the living room records audio too. I have three weeks of conversations saved in the cloud. Including the part where you planned how to slowly strip my assets and transfer them to your precious son once the divorce was safely engineered.”

Julian scrambled to his feet, ignoring the slipping towel. “Harper, where did you—how long have you known?”

“Long enough to buy a ticket to your funeral,” I said.

I turned around, walking back out into the bright, open living room where the untouched anniversary dinner sat waiting under the soft glow of the candles.

“Get out of my house,” I said over my shoulder.
