Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Uncle Richard

Six months passed, and the penthouse on Fifth Avenue was no longer a quiet, sterile monument to solitude.
The sound of soft baby laughter filled the wide hallways. Leo and Julian, now seven months old, were chubby, healthy infants crawling across plush rugs, surrounded by colorful developmental toys and cared for by two full-time nurses Nathan had hired.
Elelliana had transformed. Enrolled in an elite private academy in Upper East Manhattan, she excelled at an astonishing rate. Her teachers reported that her focus was terrifyingly sharp for a child her age—she devoured books on mathematics, history, and languages as if trying to reclaim every second of education she had lost while living on the streets.
Yet, despite the luxury and security, Elelliana never slept without the twenty-seven cents napkin under her pillow, and she never let a single crumb of food go to waste.
In his private office at Sterling Global Asset Management, Nathan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing a thick intelligence dossier provided by his chief of security, Marcus.
"Richard Vance," Marcus said, laying a series of surveillance photographs on the desk. "He’s a mid-level logistics manager at Vance Shipping. A heavy gambler, deep in debt to loan sharks in Atlantic City. Three weeks ago, he realized his late brother’s life insurance policy—worth two million dollars—was tied up in a trust that requires the signatures of his surviving children to clear."
Nathan picked up a photograph of Richard Vance—a slick, bloated man with thinning hair and cheap suits, entering an illegal underground casino in Queens.
"He abandoned the children to die on the street," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a register that made the air in the office feel ten degrees colder. "And now he wants their inheritance?"
"He doesn't just want it, boss—he’s desperate," Marcus warned. "He discovered that Elelliana and the twins weren't processed through the state foster system. He’s hired a private investigator to track down where they went. If he finds out they’re with you, he’ll try to use custody laws to claim legal guardianship over the children just to access the insurance payout."
Nathan leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "He won't get within ten miles of them. Have our legal team file for formal adoption papers today. I am legally adopting Elelliana, Leo, and Julian."
"Understood, boss. But Richard is getting bolder. He was seen hanging around the perimeter of Elelliana’s school yesterday afternoon."
Nathan’s hand slammed down onto the desk, rattling the glass coffee cup. "What?!"
"My security team spotted him before he could approach her," Marcus said quickly. "We escorted her safely into the armored limousine, but Richard knows she’s in Manhattan now. He’s looking for leverage."
That afternoon, when the armored limousine pulled into the penthouse garage, Nathan was waiting at the elevator. Elelliana stepped out, carrying her heavy school backpack, her face pale.
"He was there, wasn't he, Nathan?" Elelliana asked quietly, her sharp blue eyes reading Nathan’s expression instantly. "Uncle Richard."
Nathan walked over, taking her heavy backpack from her shoulder. "He cannot hurt you, Elelliana. My security team is watching every move he makes."
"He doesn't want me," Elelliana said, her voice filled with a bitter maturity far beyond her eight years. "He wants the insurance paper my dad signed before the fire. My dad told me about it... he said if anything ever happened to him, that money was supposed to buy a house for me and the boys."
"Where is the paper, Elelliana?" Nathan asked softly.
Elelliana reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key on a thin leather string—the key she had kept hidden inside her dirty shoe during her weeks on the street.
"It’s in a safety deposit box at the Queens Savings Bank," she whispered. "My dad gave me the key the night before the fire. He told me never to give it to Uncle Richard."
Before Nathan could respond, his private encrypted phone chimed. It was an unknown number. He tapped the speaker button.
"Sterling," a coarse, greasy voice sneered through the speaker. "I hear you’ve got my niece and nephews in your fancy penthouse."
Nathan’s expression turned into a mask of pure, murderous rage, but his voice remained deadly calm. "Richard Vance."
"That’s right, billionaire," Richard snickered. "I know the law. I’m their blood uncle, their legal next of kin. You’ve got no right to hold my family. Either you bring Elelliana to my lawyer’s office tomorrow morning with her father’s key, or I call the NYPD and the press, accusing you of kidnapping three minor orphans."
Nathan glanced down at Elelliana, who was trembling, clutching the silver key against her chest. He placed a soothing hand on her head, looking straight into her eyes as he spoke into the phone.
"Richard," Nathan said, his tone chillingly precise. "You have thirty seconds to enjoy your freedom. Because by tomorrow morning, you won't have a lawyer, you won't have a job, and you won't have a single cent to your name."
"You think you scare me?!" Richard barked into the receiver. "I want that two million dollars!"
"You should have cared about your family when they were starving in a grocery store," Nathan said flatly.

He ended the call, turned to Marcus, and gave a single order:
"Execute Protocol Alpha on Vance Shipping. Buy their debt by midnight. Destroy him."
