Chapter 10 - Our Forever Home

Five years later, the Nashville suburbs were alive with the bright colors of a warm summer evening.

Our driveway was parked with two cars—my reliable construction truck and Amy’s sleek electric SUV. In the backyard, a brand-new wooden playset stood beside a flourishing garden where tomatoes and bell peppers grew in neat, vibrant rows.

Tonight was not a chaotic, forced family gathering filled with opportunistic strangers and stolen food. Tonight was a quiet, intimate backyard barbecue celebrating Frederick's sixth birthday, alongside his three-year-old sister, Maya, who was currently trying her absolute best to blow out the single candle on her own miniature cupcake while wearing a sparkly princess tiara.

"Make a wish, sweetie," Amy whispered, kneeling beside Maya with a glowing, proud smile.

Maya squeezed her eyes shut, huffed out a mighty breath, and extinguished the candle in one valiant puff as Frederick and I cheered loudly, clapping our hands.

"Best birthday ever!" Maya declared, immediately reaching for a sticky chocolate-covered finger to taste her victory.

I looked across the patio at Amy. She was glowing, radiant, and completely at peace, her eyes shining with the kind of deep, unshakable happiness that only comes from weathering the worst of storms and emerging safely on the other side.

She caught my gaze, walked over, and slipped her hand into mine, intertwining our fingers.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Bradley," she teased softly, leaning her head against my shoulder.

I looked out over our yard—at our children laughing, our home standing strong and secure behind us, and the golden summer sun dipping below the horizon.

"I was just thinking," I said, kissing the top of her head, "that I am the luckiest man in the world. And that no matter what rules anyone ever tries to make in life, the only ones that truly matter are the ones we write together with love, loyalty, and each other."

May you like

Amy smiled, pressing her cheek against my chest as the evening breeze rustled the leaves above us.

We had built our fortress from the ground up, brick by brick, tear by tear, and love by love. And inside our home, nothing could ever break us again.
