Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in Court

The Davidson County Criminal Courtroom was packed to capacity two weeks later.
The media had caught wind of the story—local construction tycoon exposes massive family embezzlement ring, traps mother and corrupt attorney using encrypted home security surveillance—and news vans crowded the courthouse steps.
Teresa Bradley sat at the defense table, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit instead of her usual designer dresses. Her hair was unstyled, her face pale, and her trademark arrogance replaced by a bitter, hollow glare of pure hatred as she watched Connor and Amy walk into the gallery.
Amy wore the blue dress Connor had bought her on the night of the disaster—the one she had admired online months ago. She walked with her head held high, holding Frederick’s small hand as he toddled beside them, completely healthy and full of life.
Judge Miller presided over the hearing with a stern, unyielding expression.
“Mrs. Bradley,” Judge Miller addressed Teresa directly. “You stand accused of sixteen counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, forgery of public documents, and interstate financial conspiracy. Your own defense counsel has withdrawn, and the ledger evidence submitted by federal investigators—alongside decrypted surveillance logs provided by the plaintiff—presents an open-and-shut case of premeditated financial predation.”
Teresa stood up abruptly, slamming her cuffed hands onto the defense table.
“It’s my money!” she shrieked, pointing a shaking finger directly at Connor. “I raised him! I built this family! That ungrateful little gold-digger he married came in and stole my son away from me! I had every right to take what was mine!”
The courtroom murmured in shock at her complete lack of remorse.
Judge Miller banged his gavel twice, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot through the room. “Silence! Your delusions of entitlement do not constitute legal ownership, Mrs. Bradley. You systematically abused your position of trust, exploited family members, engaged in forgery, and endangered the health of an infant child for personal greed.”
The judge paused, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the final sentencing guidelines.
“On all sixteen counts, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. Furthermore, all remaining assets held in your name, including offshore accounts and secondary properties, are hereby seized and ordered to be returned in full restitution to Connor and Amy Bradley.”
The gavel came down one final time.
Clack. Clack.
As the bailiffs stepped forward to cuff Teresa and lead her away through the side doors, she screamed out one last curse, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls.

“You haven't won, Connor! You’ll never be free of me!”
Connor didn't even flinch. He kept his arm securely around Amy’s waist, watching his mother disappear down the hallway into the grey shadows of a prison transport van. The past was finally, irrevocably locked away.
