Chapter 2 - THE BREAKING OF THE MASK

The wet, sickening crack of metal against bone echoed off the tiled bathroom walls.

Alejandro staggered backward, his head snapping to the side as blood burst from his split lip. He hit the wall hard, shattering the glass soap dish, and slid down onto the tile floor, groaning in dazed agony, clutching his shattered jaw.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

I dropped the skillet, reached into the tub, and lifted Sofia out of the water. I wrapped her immediately in a thick, dry towel, pulling her shivering body tightly against my chest.

"Mommy's here," I sobbed into her wet hair, my body shaking with adrenaline. "Mommy's here, baby. I've got you. I've got you."

Sofia didn't cry aloud. She just clutched my shirt with her tiny, pricked fingers, burying her head into my neck, her whole frame quivering like an autumn leaf.

On the floor, Alejandro groaned, shaking his head as he dragged himself up onto his knees. Blood dripped down his chin onto his white shirt. His eyes, dark and filled with pure, murderous venom, locked onto me.

"You crazy bitch..." he spat, his voice garbled from his broken jaw. "You hit me in my own house?!"

"Get out," I said, my voice dropping an octave, completely devoid of fear, replaced by a cold, lethal authority. "Get out before I kill you."

Alejandro let out a harsh, gory laugh, wiping the blood from his mouth with the back of his sleeve. He stood up, towering over me in the cramped, steamy bathroom, blocking the doorway.

"Get out?" he sneered, taking a step toward me. "This house is in my name, Elena! Your name isn't on the lease! You're a broke widow working for minimum wage! Who do you think the police are going to believe? An emotional, crazy woman who attacked her husband with a pan, or the man who provides for her?"

He reached out his wet, heavy hand to grab my hair.

"Put your hands on me again," I whispered, reaching into my jacket pocket with my free hand, pulling out my phone, "and the police won't need to guess. The audio recording on my phone has been live since I unlocked the back door."

Alejandro’s hand froze mid-air.

His eyes flicked down to the glowing screen of my phone. On the display, the voice memo app was active, red bars bouncing, recording every breath, every word, every threat.

"I recorded you telling her she would die if she spoke," I said, my voice steady as stone. "I recorded you threatening to destroy her. And I recorded you admitting you were abusing her."

Alejandro’s face drained of color. The arrogance that had sustained him for months crumpled under the weight of his own recorded cruelty.

"Elena... wait..." he stammered, taking a cautious step back, his tone suddenly shifting back into that pathetic, pleading demeanor. "Let's talk about this. I was just stressed... I didn't mean it... I would never hurt her—"

"Step away from the door," I commanded.

Alejandro backed out into the hallway, his hands raised in surrender, blood dripping onto the carpet.

I carried Sofia past him, not looking back once, and walked straight out the front door into the cool evening air. I set her gently in the car seat of my sedan, buckled her in tight, and locked the doors.

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.

"San Antonio Emergency Services, what is your location?"

"My name is Elena Morales," I said, my voice echoed clearly down the quiet street. "I am reporting an ongoing case of severe child abuse, domestic assault, and terroristic threats at 412 Elm Street. My husband is armed with a knife in the house, and I have audio proof of his crimes."

Inside the house, through the front window, I saw Alejandro watching me through the blinds, his face pale, realization finally dawning on him that the woman he thought he could control had just burned his entire life to the ground.
