Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Vanguard

Three months later.
The morning sun broke beautifully over the rugged cliffs of Cape Perpetua, casting a brilliant, golden light across the private, heavily fortified estate overlooking the Oregon coast. The air was fresh, thick with the clean, sharp scent of pine and salt water.
Noah was running across the expansive green lawn, wearing a bright red fleece jacket and brand-new boots, his loud, beautiful laughter echoing over the roar of the ocean as he chased a young German Shepherd puppy.
The toy locomotive he had dropped at the farmers market sat proudly on a custom shelf in his new playroom inside.
Daniel stood beside me on the massive cedar deck, a warm cup of coffee in his hand. The sharp, hyper-vigilant tension that had defined him for five years had finally softened, replaced by a deep, radiant serenity as he watched our son trip over the grass and burst into a fit of giggles.
He reached over, his large, warm hand sliding comfortably over mine, his thumb tracing the line of my knuckles.
"The New York accounts are fully structured into his name," Daniel whispered, his gray eyes clear and filled with an absolute devotion. "The family business is legal now, Emily. The shipping lines, the real estate—everything is clean. No more shadows."
"I still can't believe you tore down the entire syndicate in a weekend," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder.
"I would have burned the entire city to the ground if it meant keeping him safe," Daniel replied, pulling me close against his side.
I looked out over the infinite Pacific horizon, a deep, beautiful sense of peace finally settling into my soul.

I had spent four years running from a mafia boss, believing that love was a loaded gun that would eventually destroy us. But I had completely forgotten that the most dangerous man in the world is only a monster to those who try to harm what he loves.
I smiled, taking a deep, clean breath of the ocean air, completely victorious, completely free, and finally, a family.
