Chapter 3 - The War of Public Perception

Damian Prescott was not a man who surrendered quietly.
Within forty-eight hours of the court order, Damian launched a vicious smear campaign. Using a prominent Atlanta crisis public relations firm, he leaked false stories to local news outlets and food blogs, claiming that The Hearth was being sabotaged by an "unstable ex-partner and her bitter mother." He posted staged videos of the restaurant’s kitchen, claiming Chloe had walked out on her duties due to severe mental health issues.
"He's trying to ruin my reputation as a designer," Chloe said, staring at her phone in disbelief as comments poured in on her old social media accounts. "Clients are canceling their inquiries. They think I'm crazy."
I took the phone gently from her hands and turned it off.
"Never argue with a liar on his own ground, Chloe," I said, setting down a bowl of hot soup in front of her. "Your father taught me that. When someone throws mud, you don't throw it back—you use the rain to wash them away."
I called Susan—my friend in Richmond who had first alerted me to Chloe’s condition.
Susan was a former investigative journalist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Within two hours, Susan arrived at our house with a photographer and a female medical expert specializing in domestic coercive control.
"Margaret," Susan said, hugging me tightly. "What he did to Chloe is happening to women all over this city behind closed doors. It's time to tell the real story."
With Chloe's permission, Susan conducted an in-depth, exclusive interview. Chloe spoke with raw, heartbreaking honesty about the gradual process of abuse: the initial charm, the subtle isolation, the financial control, the physical degradation, and finally, the night her mother found her kneeling on the kitchen floor eating scraps off dirty plates.
We submitted the medical forensic report documenting Chloe's severe malnutrition, her wrist bruises, and the legal filings detailing the eight months of unpaid labor.
The article was published on Sunday morning under a bold, unyielding headline:
BEHIND THE LUXURY MENU: THE STARVATION, FRAUD, AND EXPLOITATION AT THE HEARTH.
The story went viral within hours.
The image of the elegant restaurant owner starving his brilliant designer wife hit the community like an earthquake. Food influencers, local celebrities, and high-profile chefs who had previously frequented The Hearth publicly condemned Damian.
By Sunday evening, three major corporate events scheduled at The Hearth were abruptly canceled. Investors pulled out their backing, and protests began forming on the sidewalk outside the restaurant, with people holding signs that read: HUMAN DIGNITY IS NOT ON THE MENU.
Meanwhile, Robert Vance struck another devastating blow.
Using the financial records recovered from Chloe's hard drive, Robert delivered a formal file to the Georgia Department of Revenue. The file proved that Damian had been underreporting The Hearth's cash sales by forty percent while claiming Chloe's unpaid labor as a taxable "consulting expense" to claim massive tax write-offs.
On Monday morning, tax agents accompanied by local law enforcement raided Damian’s private office at the restaurant, seizing his computers, filing cabinets, and personal safe.
That evening, Damian called my cell phone from an unlisted number.
When I answered, his voice was no longer arrogant or polished. It was frantic, breathless, and laced with venomous rage.
"You old bitch," Damian hissed into the receiver. "You're ruining me! Do you have any idea what I will do to you and your daughter if you don't drop these lawsuits?!"
I sat comfortably on my porch, listening to his desperate threats, feeling nothing but a profound, icy calm.

"Damian," I said softly, my teacher voice perfectly measured. "You told me my daughter deserved to go hungry. Now, you’re going to learn what it feels like to lose everything you ever took for granted."
I pressed End Call and immediately forwarded the recording to Robert Vance and the Fulton County District Attorney.
