Chapter 5 - The Empress of the Hudson

Six Months Later.

The snow fell softly over the rolling lawns of the massive estate overlooking the Hudson River. Inside the grand library, a fire crackled warmly in the stone fireplace, casting long, dancing shadows across the mahogany shelves and the thick Persian rugs.

"Mama! Ma!"

A sweet, high-pitched giggle echoed through the room. Anya, now a chubby, radiant nine-month-old with her father’s stormy gray eyes, was crawling rapidly across the rug toward me. She was wearing a thick, knit pink sweater, her cheeks full of life and health.

I laughed, kneeling on the floor and catching her in my arms, pulling her warm, fragrant body against my chest.

"Slow down, principessa," I murmured, kissing her forehead.

I wore a beautiful, emerald-green silk dress—a gift from Matteo’s personal stylist. The old, worn nursing pads and stained blouses of my past life were long gone, replaced by the wardrobe of a woman who was treated like royalty.

The heavy oak doors of the library opened, and Matteo walked in. He had just returned from a meeting in Manhattan, his charcoal overcoat covered in a light dusting of snow. The moment his eyes found us on the floor, the cold, ruthless lines of his face melted into a soft, genuine warmth.

He walked over, kneeling beside us and wrapping his massive, tattooed arm around both of our shoulders. Anya squealed with delight, grabbing his tie with her sticky fingers.

"How is my family?" Matteo asked, his voice low and rich as he pressed a kiss to my temple.

"She ate all of her peach puree today," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. "And she’s trying to stand on her own."

"Of course she is. She has her mother's strength," he said softly.

I looked at him, the man who had once terrified me on a private jet over the Atlantic. In the six months I had lived in his golden cage, the walls of my prison had slowly turned into a sanctuary. Matteo hadn't just kept me to feed his daughter; he had protected me, cherished me, and rebuilt the shattered pieces of my heart with a quiet, fierce devotion I never expected.

He had given me a daughter when I thought I would never hold a child again. And in return, I had given him a home.

The world outside these gates was still dangerous, filled with guns, money, and shadows—but inside, under the watchful eyes of the Volkov guards and the warm glow of the fire, the ghosts of our pasts were finally at peace. I had thought he was taking my freedom that night on the jet; I never realized he was actually opening the door to my true home.
