Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Future

Two weeks passed like a healing rain over a parched landscape.
The news of Julian Vance’s arrest and Patricia’s pending trial had dominated the business news for days. Vance Development collapsed almost overnight as investors pulled their funding, and my firm easily secured the municipal contract. Patricia faced up to five years in state prison for corporate conspiracy and felony assault, her lawyer desperately begging for a plea deal that I flatly refused to give.
Inside my home, however, the corporate world ceased to exist.
I cleared my schedule completely, taking a full month off from work—something I hadn't done since my late wife had passed away years ago. I spent every morning making breakfast with the girls, every afternoon walking through the gardens, and every evening sitting by the fireplace, listening to them talk about their school days.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, I called Rosa into my study.
She walked in politely, her hands folded in front of her crisp apron. "You wanted to see me, Mr. Richard?"
"Please, sit down, Rosa," I said, gesturing to the plush leather armchair across from my desk.
She sat down cautiously.
I pushed an official legal document across the desk toward her. She looked at it nervously, her brow furrowing. "What is this, sir? Am I being let go?"
"Read it," I smiled gently.
Rosa picked up the paper and began to read. As her eyes scanned the lines, her hand began to tremble, and she gasped softly.
"This... this is an employment contract for the position of Head Estate Manager and Director of the Girls' Trust Fund," she whispered, looking up at me in disbelief. "With a lifetime salary, full health benefits, and... a college fund for my own children?"
"It's more than that, Rosa," I said, leaning forward. "It gives you full executive authority over all domestic operations in this house. No one—not a future partner, not a relative, not an executive—can ever question your position here again. You fought for my daughters when I was too blind to see the truth. You are family now."
Tears welled up in Rosa’s eyes. She covered her mouth with her hand, unable to speak for several moments. "Mr. Richard... I don't know what to say... I only did what any decent person would do."

"You did what a protector does," I corrected her gently. "And my daughters love you. Will you accept?"
Rosa wiped her tears, a radiant, happy smile lighting up her face. "It would be my greatest honor, sir."
