Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

By 6:45 PM, the grand ballroom of the Vale Estate was bathed in the warm, deceptive glow of crystal chandeliers.

The twelve members of the executive board sat around a massive, polished mahogany table that had been rolled into the center of the room. Arthur Marrow sat near the end, adjusting his silk tie, a smug, triumphant smile playing on his lips. He was whispering to his daughter, Celeste, who looked breathtaking in a custom-tailored emerald gown. She was sipping champagne, her posture regal, completely unaware that the velvet trap was closing around her neck.

Adrian sat at the right hand of the empty chairman’s chair, his expression a mix of exhaustion and confusion. He kept looking at his watch, checking his phone.

"Adrian, darling, relax," Celeste purred, reaching over to pat his hand with manicured fingers. "Your father is a busy man. I'm sure his flight from London was just delayed. Besides, my father and I have some wonderful news to share with the board tonight regarding our new shipping partnership."

"The partnership hasn't been approved by the chairman yet, Celeste," Adrian said softly, rubbing his temples. "My father is very strict about vendor vetting."

"Oh, please," Arthur Marrow chuckled, waving his hand dismissively. "Your father has been overseas for six months. He relies on your judgment, Adrian. And once we are family, our interests are his interests."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The security guards stepped back, bowing their heads in absolute silence. The room went dead still as footsteps echoed against the marble floor. But it wasn't a man in a bespoke Brioni suit who walked into the light.

It was me.

I was still wearing the cracked leather boots, the faded trousers, and the damp shirt of the gatekeeper. The only difference was that my head was bare, my gray hair brushed back, and my eyes held the freezing, unyielding power of the man who had built every wall in this building.

Celeste dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered against the marble, the sparkling wine pooling around her expensive designer heels.
