Chapter 1 - The Call at 30,000 Feet

The cabin air in First Class felt freezing, sharp and metallic against my skin, but inside my chest, a terrifying, silent calm took hold.

Jason’s hands began to tremble. The smooth, practiced confidence of a million-dollar sales executive evaporated in a fraction of a second. His face was gray, a sickly shade of ash, contrasting sharply with the pristine white headrest behind him. Beside him, Madison’s eyes were practically bulging out of her head, her glossy lips parted in a frozen, silent gasp. She scrambled backward into her leather seat, pressing her spine so hard against the window panel it looked like she was trying to merge with the frame of the Boeing 737.

"E-Emily..." Jason stammered, his voice dropping into a strangled, squeaky whisper. "What... what are you doing on this plane? You said... you said you were going to—"

"To Denver?" I interrupted smoothly, keeping my voice low, sweet, and laced with absolute, razor-sharp poison. "I am going to Denver, Jason. On this plane. The flight you lied about. The flight you booked with our joint American Express card under 'corporate travel,' I presume?"

Madison let out a small, pathetic squeak. "Mrs. Carter... I... I can explain—"

"Shut your mouth, Madison," I said without even turning my head to look at her. My gaze remained locked on my husband’s bulging, bloodshot eyes. "You're a secretary. You take dictation. You don't speak unless spoken to."

A flight attendant stepped into the aisle behind me, carrying a navy-blue fleece blanket. "Here is that blanket for your wife, sir—"

"Oh, she's not his wife," I said, turning my head slightly with a dazzling, brilliant smile that didn't reach my ice-cold eyes. "I’m his wife. The woman currently paying for his luxury car, his country club membership, and sixty percent of the mortgage on the penthouse he sleeps in. This girl is just his temporary flight entertainment."

The flight attendant froze, her mouth dropping open. She looked from my crisp, tailored executive blazer to Jason’s sweating face, to Madison, who looked like she was about to vomit into her designer tote bag.

"Excuse me," the attendant murmured, backing away slowly with the blanket still held in her hands. "I'll... I'll give you folks some privacy."

"Emily, please," Jason hissed, grabbing his seat belt buckle with white knuckles as if he were trying to anchor himself against an incoming storm. "Sit down. Don't make a scene on a commercial flight. People are looking. We can talk about this when we land—"

"We aren't talking when we land, Jason," I said quietly.

I reached into my leather purse, my fingers closing around my phone. I unlocked the screen with my thumb. Thanks to the in-flight Wi-Fi network I had connected to ten minutes after takeoff, I had full, high-speed cellular access through my carrier's satellite service.

I tapped a contact saved at the top of my favorites list.

"Who are you calling?" Jason panicked, reaching out his hand to grab my wrist. "Emily, put the phone away! Stop acting crazy!"

I stepped back seamlessly, dodging his fingers with the practiced ease of a woman who had spent ten years navigating construction sites full of dangerous equipment. I pressed the speakerphone icon.

The line rang twice.

"Emily?" A sharp, dignified female voice echoed through the speaker, crisp and crystal clear despite being thirty thousand feet in the air. "Is everything alright? Your flight should still be in transit."

It was Eleanor Vance.

Senior Managing Partner of Vance, Sterling & Associates—the top forensic divorce firm in New England, and a woman who also happened to sit on the board of directors for my construction firm.

Jason’s eyes widened in absolute, primal terror. He recognized the voice instantly. Eleanor Vance was notorious in Boston financial circles for stripping unfaithful corporate executives down to their sock drawers.

"Eleanor," I said, keeping my tone perfectly conversational. "I’m calling to initiate immediate emergency asset preservation protocols against my husband, Jason Carter."

"Go on, my dear," Eleanor replied, her tone sharpening like a honed blade. "I'm opening your file now."

"Emily, don't!" Jason yelled, trying to unbuckle his seatbelt. "Eleanor, don't listen to her! She’s having a nervous breakdown!"

"Jason is currently seated in seat 2B of Flight 408," I continued, ignoring his frantic squavering entirely. "He is accompanied by his administrative assistant, Madison Reed. He has spent the last three hours engaging in overt marital infidelity, including presenting her to the cabin crew as his legal wife."

"Understood," Eleanor stated cleanly. "Are you safe?"

"I am perfectly fine. I am filing for divorce on the grounds of severe marital misconduct and fraud. I want you to immediately execute the freeze on all secondary investment portfolios, revoke his authorized user status on the construction firm's executive line of credit, and notify the landlord of our Beacon Hill penthouse that the lease will not be renewed in his name."

"Consider it done," Eleanor said without a second of hesitation. "I am dispatching my process server to the gate at Denver International Airport right now. He will be served the moment he steps off the jet bridge."

"Wait! Eleanor, no!" Jason shouted, practically scrambling over Madison’s lap to reach for my phone. "You can't freeze the investment portfolio! That’s my capital for the regional expansion proposal! I have a presentation with the Chief Operating Officer of Apex Logistics in two days!"

I smiled, stepping back another foot down the aisle.

"Oh, Jason," I whispered, leaning in so the speakerphone captured every word. "You don't have a presentation in two days."

He froze. "What?"

"I am the Operations Director for the firm that handles Apex Logistics' commercial real estate construction," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, terrifying register. "I spoke to their COO, Marcus Croft, yesterday morning. I recommended your firm for their regional distribution contract based on your 'unwavering personal integrity.' I am calling Marcus the moment I step off this plane to inform him that my endorsement has been revoked."

Jason looked as if he had been struck by lightning. The contract with Apex Logistics was worth two million dollars in personal commissions—the single deal he was relying on to pay off his hidden gambling debts and maintain his absurdly lavish lifestyle.

"Emily... no..." Jason choked out, his voice breaking into a whisper. "You can't do that. That’s my career... that’s my entire life..."

"You ruined your life the second you bought her a ticket in First Class with my money," I said.

I looked down at Madison, who was sobbing silently into her hands, trying desperately to hide her face behind her long blonde hair.

"Enjoy the rest of your flight, kids," I said brightly, clicking the end-call button. "The weather in Denver is cold. But trust me... the atmosphere on the ground is going to be much worse."

I turned on my heel and walked back toward row fourteen, leaving my cheating husband and his terrified mistress drowning in the suffocating silence of First Class.
