Chapter 5 - The Showdown at Pier 42

The rain pounded against the rusted iron roof of Warehouse 42.

Inside, the smell of damp saltwater, diesel fuel, and rotting wood hung heavy in the air. Dim yellow lights dangled from rusty chains, illuminating a cluster of black SUVs parked near the center of the vast, open floor.

Hector Vance stood near the hood of a Range Rover, pouring himself a glass of whiskey from a crystal decanter. He was a squat, heavily built man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat, a thick gold watch, and a prominent gold tooth that glinted under the dingy light.

"Where the hell are they?!" Hector roared at his lieutenant, a scarred man named Bruno. "They were supposed to have the girl and the kid here twenty minutes ago!"

"The hospital went on lockdown, Boss," Bruno said nervously, checking his phone. "The comms went dead right after the shooting started on the fifth floor. Something went wrong."

"Nothing goes wrong!" Hector slammed his glass onto the hood of the car, shattering it into pieces. "That kid has the micro-SD card! If that ledger gets out, I am finished! Do you hear me?! FINISHED!"

"It's already out, Hector."

The voice echoed through the dark rafters of the warehouse like a death sentence.

Hector spun around, pulling a silver revolver from his coat. Bruno and four other armed men immediately raised their weapons, scanning the dark shadows near the entrance.

I stepped out from behind a stack of rusted shipping containers, dressed in a long black trench coat, my hands resting calmly in my pockets.

"Who the hell are you?!" Hector demanded, his voice shaking with a mix of fury and sudden panic.

"I am the man who hired Carmen Rossi to clean my floors," I said, walking slowly forward, my footsteps echoing against the concrete floor. "And I am the man who just sent your entire life's work to the FBI."

Hector’s face turned an ugly shade of ash gray. "You... you're Victor Ward."

"In the flesh," I smiled coldly.

"Shoot him! KILL HIM!" Hector screamed at his men.

CRASH!

Before Bruno or any of the mercenaries could pull their triggers, the glass skylights above the warehouse exploded inward.

Heavy ropes dropped from above as dozens of heavily armed FBI SWAT operatives descended into the building, laser sights painting red dots across the chests of Hector’s men.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS NOW!" booming voices echoed through megaphones.

Tactical doors smashed open from all sides as armored vehicles rammed through the rusted metal gates. Bright halogen spotlights blinded Hector and his crew, illuminating the overwhelming force surrounding them.

Bruno dropped his gun instantly, putting his hands on his head and hitting the floor. The other mercenaries followed suit, falling to their knees one by one.

Hector stood alone in the blinding white spotlight, his revolver trembling in his hand, looking around wildly like a trapped rat.

"It's over, Hector," Captain Vance’s voice bellowed from behind an armored truck. "Put the gun down!"

Hector looked at me, his eyes filled with pure, unadulterated hatred. He raised his revolver, aiming it directly at my chest.

"If I'm going down, you're coming with me, Ward!" he shrieked.

DOUBLE TAP—BANG! BANG!

Two sharp gunshots echoed through the warehouse.

Hector froze. His eyes widened in shock as two neat holes appeared in his right shoulder and forearm, causing the silver revolver to clatter uselessly onto the concrete floor. He collapsed onto his knees, howling in pain, as tactical officers swarmed over him, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Captain Vance stepped up beside me, lowering his sidearm.

"Nice shooting, Captain," I said calmly.

"He wasn't going to get a shot off on my best witness," Vance replied, watching as officers dragged a weeping, bleeding Hector Vance toward an armored transport van.

Vance turned to face me, offering his hand. "The evidence on that micro-SD card is ironclad, Victor. We've already seized all of Hector's illegal assets, his real estate holdings, and his offshore accounts. Carmen Rossi and her daughter are completely cleared of all wrongdoing."

I shook his hand firmly. "What happens to Hector's seized assets?"

"Under the Victims of Crime Restitution Act," Captain Vance explained, "a significant portion of the embezzled funds that belonged to Julian Rossi will be legally restored to his surviving heirs. Carmen and Isabella are going to be very, very wealthy."

I looked out at the rainy harbor, a small, genuine smile finally breaking across my face.

"They deserve every single cent," I said.
