Chapter 5 - The Final Reckoning

The safehouse in Tarrytown was a heavily guarded compound hidden deep within a private pine forest.
Within minutes of our arrival, Dr. Sarah Evans—a top pediatric specialist on Victor’s private payroll—had Lily placed in a sterile, warm medical suite. They started an IV drip, gave her advanced thermal treatment, and monitored her vitals continuously.
By midnight, Lily’s fever had completely broken. She was resting comfortably in a soft crib, her cheeks regaining their healthy pink glow, her small hand firmly wrapping around my thumb as she slept peacefully.
I sat in a leather armchair beside the crib, wrapped in a warm blanket, sipping hot tea.
The heavy door opened, and Victor walked in. He had changed out of his ruined suit into a clean dark sweater. His face was stern, but his eyes held a quiet victory.
"How is she?" he asked gently, stepping close to the crib.
"She's resting," I smiled, looking up at him. "Dr. Evans says she'll make a full recovery in a day or two. She just needed proper care."
"She will receive the absolute best care for the rest of her life," Victor promised solemnly.
"What happened to the Marcones?" I asked softly, knowing the answer before he even spoke.
Victor sat down in the chair across from me, crossing his hands. "Antonio and Marco tried to flee the city after the failed ambush at the mansion. My men intercepted their convoy on the state line. The Marcone family is no longer a threat to anyone, Hannah. The war that started twenty-five years ago is finally over."
I let out a long, deep breath I felt like I had been holding for years. The constant fear of poverty, the cold apartment, the threats from predatory supervisors, and the dark shadows of a past I never understood—it was all gone, washed away in the winter snow.
"What happens now?" I asked quietly.
May you like
Victor reached into his pocket and placed an elegant velvet box on the table between us. Inside was the silver locket, cleaned and polished until it shone like new, attached to a brand-new platinum chain.
"What happens now," Victor said warmly, "is that my sister’s daughter and grand-daughter take their rightful place."
