Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction

Three months later, the name Langford & Associates was a memory.
Harold Langford had been forced to dissolve the consulting firm after a mass exodus of clients left him unable to pay his office lease. The family had quietly put their Willow Creek home up for sale, unable to face the whispers and cold stares of their neighbors at the grocery store and the local country club.
But Jasmine’s life was blooming.
With Adrian’s encouragement and Marsha Bell’s local connections, Jasmine had launched her own independent digital design and marketing boutique: Breathe Digital.
She had signed four local businesses within her first month, her reputation for hard work, honesty, and brilliant design earning her the respect she had always deserved. She was paying her own bills, working her own hours, and building a life on her own terms.
On a warm Friday evening, Jasmine stood on the balcony of her new, larger apartment overlooking the downtown district. The air was cool and crisp, smelling of autumn leaves and rain.
She took a deep, clear breath, feeling her lungs expand fully, without pain, without restriction.
"You're doing that a lot lately," Adrian said, stepping out onto the balcony behind her, handing her a mug of hot chamomile tea.
"Doing what?" Jasmine asked, smiling up at him.
"Just... breathing," Adrian said, wrapping an arm around her shoulder, pulling her against his side. "Like you’re enjoying the simple fact of having air."
"I am," Jasmine said softly, leaning her head against his chest. "For twenty-four years, I felt like I was taking up too much space, like even the air I breathed was something I had to apologize for. But now... I know I belong here."
"You do," Adrian whispered, kissing the top of her head. "More than anyone I know."
Her phone on the table inside buzzed.
Jasmine walked back into the room, picking it up. It was an email notification from her mother.
Jasmine opened it.
"Jasmine,
We are moving to Florida next month. Your father has taken a position with a small firm down there, and Celeste is trying to start over in Atlanta. I wanted to ask... if you would consider coming to dinner before we leave? Just the family. To put all of this behind us."
Jasmine stared at the screen. A year ago, this message would have sent her into a spiral of anxiety, her heart racing as she searched for a way to make them happy.
Now, she felt absolutely nothing. No anger, no sadness, no regret.
She tapped 'Reply.'
"No, thank you. I am busy building a life where I can actually breathe. Safe travels."

She hit 'Send.'
Then, she blocked the email address, deleted her family's numbers from her contacts list, and turned off her phone.
