Chapter 6 - The Interrogation Room

The interrogation room at the Cook County Detention Center smelled of stale coffee, industrial cleaning solution, and unrelenting despair.

Under the harsh glare of an overhead fluorescent light, Chloe Vance sat slumped in a metal chair, her designer blouse wrinkled, her hair coming undone from its immaculate French twist. The smug, untouchable socialite was gone; in her place was a terrified, weeping woman who realized that wealth and social connections could not buy her out of a federal felony indictment.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Detective Sergeant Ramirez and Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance.

For two hours, they had laid out the undeniable mountain of evidence: financial audit trails, forensic photographs of Martha’s injuries, medical records documenting systematic neglect, and digital backups of the forged property deeds.

“You’re looking at a minimum of fifteen years on the federal and state charges alone, Chloe,” Elena said calmly, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. “Aggravated elder abuse, financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, extortion, and forgery. And that’s before we factor in the tax evasion charges stemming from the undeclared income on those drained accounts.”

Chloe burst into noisy, frantic tears, burying her face in her handcuffed hands. “It was Julian! It was all Julian’s idea! He said his mother was losing her mind anyway! He said nobody would ever care about an old woman who couldn't remember her own grandchildren’s names! I just... I just went along with it because of the debts!”

“You didn't just go along with it, Chloe,” Elena replied, her tone devoid of sympathy. “You were the one who administered the sedatives when she screamed too loud. You were the one who threatened to institutionalize her if she didn't sign the transfer papers. You don't get to pass the blame now that the bill has come due.”

Down the hall in Interrogation Room B, Julian Vance was experiencing a very different kind of breakdown.

Unlike his wife, Julian wasn't crying. He sat staring blankly at the metal table, his hands cuffed to the bolted loop, rocking back and forth in a state of catatonic shock. The polished, successful businessman who had lorded over his family’s estate was completely shattered.

When the door opened and his defense attorney—a high-priced corporate lawyer rushed in by a panicked family friend—sat down across from him, Julian barely looked up.

“Julian, listen to me,” the lawyer whispered urgently. “The State Attorney’s office is throwing the book at you. Judge Thorne has already denied bail due to flight risk and the severity of the physical endangerment charges. Your sister... your sister is personally prosecuting the case.”

Julian’s head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot and wide. “Ellie? She’s prosecuting her own brother?”

“She’s an Assistant Attorney General, Julian,” the lawyer said grimly. “And she has an airtight case. Unless you cooperate, plead guilty to the financial fraud counts, and turn over every hidden asset you and Chloe control, you are going to spend the next twenty years of your life behind bars.”

Julian slumped back in his chair, staring at the water-stained ceiling tiles. For the first time in his life, there were no loopholes to exploit, no legal technicalities to hide behind, and no mother to protect him from the consequences of his own greed.
