Chapter 2: The Arrest of Patricia Parker

"You cannot keep me out of my son's room!" Patricia’s shrill voice echoed down the sterile hospital corridor.
The door swung open, and my mother marched in, her designer handbag slung over her arm, her chin held high as if she still owned the world. She took one look at Hannah’s tears, then at Dr. Grant, and immediately put on her mask of aristocratic concern.
"Ethan, thank goodness," Patricia said, ignoring the doctor entirely. "The nurses outside are being completely unreasonable. I came to check on Hannah, but they are treating me like a stranger. We need to take Owen and go home. This hospital is clearly incompetent."
"Stand exactly where you are, Ms. Parker," Dr. Grant said, stepping between my mother and Hannah's bed.
Patricia scoffed, her eyes narrowing. "Excuse me? Do you know who I am? My family has funded the pediatric wing of this county's medical network for a decade. I suggest you watch your tone."
"I don't care about your family's money," Dr. Grant replied smoothly. "But the police officers who just entered the hallway certainly care about the forensic match between your fingers and the bruises on this young woman’s arms."
Patricia’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second, but she quickly recovered, turning her glare directly onto me. "Ethan! Are you honestly listening to this nonsense? Your wife fell out of bed because she was clumsy and exhausted. I tried to catch her! That is how she got those marks! She is fabricating stories because she cannot handle the pressure of being a mother!"
I stood up slowly. I walked over to the bassinet, gently laid Owen down, and then turned to face my mother. I had spent thirty-four years of my life making excuses for her controlling behavior. I had tolerated her insults, her manipulation, and her cruelty because she was "family."
That ended today.
"She didn't fall, Mother," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You took her phone. You held her down. You left her to rot in a fever while my son screamed in hunger. You are a monster."
"Ethan James Parker!" Patricia gasped, her voice rising in theatrical outrage. "How dare you speak to your mother that way! After everything I have sacrificed for you—"
"Drop the act, Patricia," a new voice barked from the doorway.
Two uniform police officers stepped into the room, accompanied by a detective in a trench coat. The detective held up a plastic evidence bag. Inside it was Hannah’s smartphone.
"We just searched your vehicle in the hospital parking lot, Ms. Parker," the detective said. "We found the victim's phone hidden beneath the spare tire in your trunk. We also found a logged text message on your private phone to a family attorney, asking about emergency custody procedures due to 'maternal instability' dated three days ago."
Patricia froze. The trap had snapped shut.
"Patricia Parker, you are under arrest for felony assault, unlawful imprisonment, and child endangerment," the officer said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
As the cold metal clicked around her wrists, my mother’s elegant facade shattered completely. She twisted in the officers' grip, her face contorting into an expression of raw, unadulterated venom as she looked at Hannah.

"You ruined my family!" Patricia screamed, her voice echoing horribly down the hospital hallway as she was dragged away. "You are nothing, Hannah! A nobody! Ethan will leave you! You will never be a real Parker!"
The heavy double doors of the ward slammed shut behind them, leaving the room in a sudden, shocking silence.
