Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

By five o'clock that evening, the story of Ryan Miller’s public firing and eviction had spread like wildfire through our social circles.

At a rundown motel on the outskirts of town, Vivian sat on a sagging bed, surrounded by three designer suitcases she had managed to pack before the power was cut. She was clutching her phone, frantically dialing her friends from the local country club, trying to gather support.

"I’m telling you, Brenda, she’s completely unhinged!" Vivian wailed into the receiver, her voice loud and shrill. "She threw Ryan out of his own company! She locked us out in the freezing cold! And she brought her ungrateful, sick mother into our lives to manipulate him! We are taking her to court for millions!"

"Vivian," Brenda’s voice came coldly through the speaker. "We’ve all seen the news reports. Marcus Mercer released the security footage from your driveway this morning. We saw you shoving an elderly woman with arthritis down the kitchen steps."

Vivian’s breath caught in her throat. "That... that was an accident! She dropped my fine china!"

"Do not call this number again, Vivian," Brenda said flatly, and the line went dead.

Vivian dropped her phone onto the bed, her hands shaking with rage. Just then, the motel room door burst open.

Ryan staggered into the room, his tie undone, his eyes bloodshot, carrying a paper bag containing two cheap fast-food burgers. He looked defeated, small, and utterly broken.

"Did you talk to the lawyers?!" Vivian demanded, jumping off the bed and grabbing his arm. "What did they say?! How much can we sue her for?!"

Ryan threw the fast-food bag onto the small wooden table and slumped into a chair, burying his face in his hands.

"There are no lawyers, Mom," Ryan muttered, his voice hollow. "I called five different firms downtown. The moment I mentioned Claire Vance, every single one of them turned me down. Marcus Mercer has tied up all our assets. My personal checking account was frozen three hours ago because it was linked to Claire’s primary credit line."

Vivian gasped, clutching her neck. "Frozen?! How are we supposed to pay for this room?! How am I supposed to buy my heart medicine?!"

"She owns everything, Mom!" Ryan suddenly screamed, jumping up from his chair and slamming his fist against the laminate desk. "She owns the firm I worked for! She owns the house across the street! She owns the damn mansion across from that! We don't have a penny! We don't even have a car!"

Vivian backed away, her face twisting into a bitter, calculating snarl. "Then we use the kids," she whispered softly.

Ryan blinked, looking up at his mother. "What?"

"The twins, Ryan!" Vivian said, her eyes flashing with dangerous, unhinged intent. "Emma and Oliver! They are your children! Under state law, you have equal custody rights! If she wants to see those kids, she will have to give us half of everything she owns! We file an emergency petition for full physical custody tomorrow morning, claiming she’s an unfit mother who works eighty hours a week!"

Ryan looked at his mother, a slow, desperate grin creeping across his pale face.

"Custody..." Ryan breathed, the greed returning to his eyes like a poison. "She would burn the world down before letting anyone take those twins."

"Exactly," Vivian sneered, stepping closer to him. "We take her children, Ryan. And then we make her buy them back."
