Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Blood

Dr. Kenneth’s face turned a sickening shade of gray as the audio of Emily's screams echoed from my phone. His hand slid off the stack of hundred-dollar bills, trembling against the mahogany surface of his desk.

"I... I didn't know," Kenneth stammered, his eyes darting toward the window. "Your brother told me she was experiencing a mental breakdown. He said she was trying to harm the baby. He paid for a private, discrete delivery to protect the family's reputation!"

"He paid you $50,000 to look the other way while they induced a forced labor that killed her," I said, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying rhythm. I stepped closer, my shadow completely covering him. "And then you signed a falsified death certificate stating she died of natural causes at home, ensuring no autopsy would be performed."

"I was under pressure!" Kenneth wept, falling back into his leather chair. "Your mother... she owns the land this clinic is built on! She threatened to ruin me!"

"You're already ruined, Doctor," I said, reaching over the desk and pulling the forged ledger toward me. I flipped to the latest entry. There it was: Infant Male Mitchell. Mother: Margaret Mitchell. Father: Caleb Mitchell.

The depravity of it made my stomach turn. They hadn't just tried to control the trust; they had legally registered my son as Caleb's child, using my mother's name as the maternal guardian to completely erase Emily and me from the birthright.

"Give me the original medical file," I ordered. "The real one. The one that shows her actual time of death and the toxicity report from whatever drug Caleb injected into her system."

Kenneth didn't hesitate. He pulled a small key from his pocket, opened a hidden wall safe behind a painting, and pulled out a thick, blue medical folder. "It's all in here. The real labs. The drug was a high-dosage synthetic oxytocin. It triggered an immediate, violent cardiac event. I tried to stabilize her, I swear... but her heart couldn't take it."

I snatched the folder from his hand. This was the final nail in their coffin. This wasn't just corporate fraud or custody manipulation anymore. This was capital murder.

"Sit down and write a full confession," I said, tossing a notepad onto his desk. "If you finish it before the federal marshals arrive, I'll make sure the prosecutor knows you cooperated. If you don't, you'll be sharing a cell with my brother for the next thirty years."

As Kenneth began frantically writing, his pen scratching against the paper, my phone buzzed again. It was Marcus.

"Daniel, they're moving," Marcus said quickly. "Your mother and Caleb just loaded Emily’s coffin into an unmarked transport van at your house. They're heading toward the private crematorium in the industrial district. If they cremate her body, the physical evidence of the injection disappears forever."

My grip tightened on the blue folder. "What’s their ETA to the crematorium?"

May you like

"Twenty minutes," Marcus replied. "I'm tailing them now, but I can't intervene legally on private property."

"You don't need to," I said, walking toward the office door. "I'm ten minutes away. And I'm bringing the hammer."
