Chapter 4 - The Subpoena and the Silence

By Tuesday afternoon, the legal counter-offensive was already in motion.
Sarah Chen’s office was located on the twelfth floor of a gleaming glass tower overlooking the James River. Elise sat across from Sarah’s mahogany desk while a paralegal named Marcus slid three heavy manila folders across the polished wood.
“We’ve filed the emergency protective orders,” Sarah announced, tapping a pen against her notepad. “Judge Katherine Vance—who has zero tolerance for local good-old-boy antics—signed off on the restraining orders against Howard and Marjorie within ten minutes of reviewing the pediatric medical report and the photographs of your face.”
Elise exhaled sharply, clutching a paper cup of black coffee. “What about Scott?”
“Scott was served with divorce papers and a temporary asset-freezing injunction this morning at his job site in Raleigh,” Sarah said, a faint, grim smile touching her lips. “According to the process server, he threw a hammer across the trailer when he read the custody terms. He tried calling my office three times within ten minutes. I blocked his number on your behalf.”
“He thinks I’ll cave,” Elise murmured, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the gray sky over the river. “He and his parents have spent my entire marriage convincing me that I am entirely dependent on them. They believe money and power insulate them from consequences.”
“They’re about to find out how thin that insulation really is,” Sarah replied, leaning forward. “Now, we need to talk about evidence. Do you have any documentation of the household dynamics? Financial records, emails, text messages?”
Elise frowned. “Most of the financial control was digital. Scott handled the primary logins for our joint accounts. But wait—” She paused, her eyes widening slightly as a memory flickered in her mind. “There’s something else.”
“What is it?”
“The back porch at the estate,” Elise said slowly. “Where I found Winnie. When we first moved into that house three years ago, Howard installed a smart-home security and camera system. There’s a wide-angle lens mounted directly above the brick wall where Winnie was standing.”
Sarah sat up straight, her professional instincts kicking into high gear instantly. “A camera? Does it record audio and video?”
“Yes,” Elise nodded, urgency building in her chest. “Howard hooked it into the central estate server. He used to brag about how he could monitor every corner of the property from his phone or his den computer.”
“If that camera was active,” Sarah said, her voice dropping into an intense whisper, “it will have captured the entire conversation between Marjorie, Howard, and Winnie when they shaved her head. It will prove premeditation, coercion, and abuse.”

“Can we subpoena the server footage?” Elise asked.
“We don't even have to wait for a standard subpoena,” Sarah said, grabbing her phone. “Given that there’s an active child abuse investigation attached to our emergency protective order, I can have a court-ordered digital forensics warrant served on the Walsh estate within two hours. We’ll seize their hard drives before they have a chance to scrub the footage.”
