Chapter 5 - The Awakening

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon when the ICU attending physician, Dr. Hayes, pushed open the double doors of Room 214 and walked over to the chair where I had been sitting for six straight hours.

He looked tired, but his eyes held a glimmer of cautious optimism.

"Mr. Mercer?"

I stood up instantly. "How is she?"

"She’s awake," Dr. Hayes said, offering a small, reassuring smile. "The cranial swelling has decreased significantly over the last few hours. She’s disoriented, and she’s in a considerable amount of pain from the facial contusions and the fractured zygomatic arch, but her cognitive responses are intact. She’s asking for you."

I didn't wait for him to finish. I brushed past him and pushed open the door to Room 214.

The room was bathed in the soft, gray light of early morning. The heart monitor beeped in a steady, reassuring rhythm—bip, bip, bip.

Violet was lying propped up on the hospital pillows. Her face was heavily bruised, a patchwork of purple, yellow, and black swelling across her left cheek and forehead, her lips split and taped with surgical strips. When she heard the door open, she turned her head slowly on the pillow.

Her big, bright brown eyes—the exact same eyes she had inherited from me—fixed on my face.

"Daddy?" her voice was a fragile, raspy croak.

I rushed to the bedside, dropping to my knees so my face was level with hers. I gently, carefully took her small, cold hand in mine, pressing my lips against her knuckles. I made sure she couldn't see the tears burning hot behind my eyelids.

"I'm here, baby," I choked out, my voice breaking for the first time since this nightmare began. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere ever again."

Violet squeezed my fingers back with what little strength she had. A single tear slipped down her bruised cheek, tracing a path through the white gauze.

"I was so scared," she whispered, her lower lip trembling. "I saw them in the hallway... I tried to run to my room... but they wouldn't let me..."

"Shh, shh, I know," I murmured, stroking her dark hair back from her forehead with infinite gentleness. "Listen to me, Violet. Look at me."

She blinked, focusing her eyes on mine.

"The men who did this are gone," I told her, every word absolute, unbreakable truth. "They are never coming back. Your uncle Tyler is in a jail cell, and the people who hurt you will never, ever be able to touch this family again. You are safe. Do you hear me? You are completely safe."

A fragile, hesitant relief washed over her features. The tension that had locked her small body into a defensive curl finally released, and she let out a long, shuddering sigh.

"Are you staying, Dad?" she asked quietly. "Are you done leaving for those long trips?"

I looked at my daughter—the little girl who had waited for me while I fought wars in foreign deserts, only to find out that the real war had been waiting for us right inside our own front door.

"I am never leaving again," I promised her, my voice ringing with a fierce, eternal vow. "My tour is over. From now on, my only mission is right here."
