Chapter 4 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Claire froze, her smile instantly evaporating. The luxury shopping bags in my mother’s hands slipped slightly, plastic rustling loudly in the sudden, suffocating silence.
"Daniel?" Claire stammered, taking an involuntary step back. Her eyes darted from me to Ethan, and then to Marcus Vance, who sat at the dining table with a thick stack of legal documents spread out before him. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in Cleveland until tomorrow night!"
"The construction site had an accident," I said, holding up my bandaged hand. "I came home early. Four days ago, to be precise."
My mother pushed her way past Rob, her face turning pale as she spotted the open door to her bedroom down the hall. "Daniel, why are the lights off? Why is this man in our house? What is going on here?"
"What's going on," Marcus Vance said, standing up from the table and buttoning his suit jacket, "is that you are all currently standing in a crime scene of your own making."
Rob stepped forward, his fists clenching, trying to assume his usual intimidating posture. "Hey! Who the hell are you? Get out of my sister's house before I throw you out!"
"I wouldn't advise doing that, Mr. Rob," Marcus replied smoothly, pointing to the discreet video camera mounted on a tripod in the corner, recording every frame. "And for the record, this is not your sister's house. This property is solely owned by Daniel. And you are currently trespassing."
Claire’s eyes widened with sudden panic. She turned to Ethan, her voice rising in pitched desperation. "Ethan! What did you tell him? What kind of lies have you been spreading while we were gone?!"
Ethan stepped forward from behind me. He didn't flinch. He didn't look down. He looked Claire straight in the eye.
"He didn't need to tell me anything, Claire," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a low, deadly register. "I found the laundry. I found my work clothes soaked in wine. And then I found the cupboard in my mother's room."
My mother gasped, clutching her chest. "You went through my personal belongings?!"
"I went through the stolen inheritance records, mother," I said, staring at her with total disgust. "The $210,000 you drained from Ethan’s trust fund. The forged signatures. The payments to Rob's gambling accounts. The tuition payments for Madison and Lily. And the private transport service you hired to kidnap my son and ship him to Montana."
"That's a lie!" Rob shouted, taking a hard step toward me. "You don't have proof of anything! You're crazy!"
"We have full bank records, forensic audit reports, handwriting analysis on every forged signature, and a signed statement from the Montana transport company," Marcus said, pulling a bundle of red-stamped documents from his briefcase. "In addition, we have the medical documentation of the physical assault inflicted on Ethan by you, Rob, on the morning of departure."
At that moment, the front door swung open fully, and Deputy Miller along with his partner stepped into the foyer.
Madison and Lily let out small screams, shrinking back behind their mother.
"Officers!" Claire shrieked, her voice cracking into hysteria. "Thank God! My husband has gone mad! He’s threatening us! Get these people out of my home!"
Deputy Miller didn't move toward us. Instead, he pulled two pairs of handcuffs from his utility belt and looked directly at Rob and my mother.
"Evelyn Miller and Robert Vance," Deputy Miller said clearly, his voice echoing through the entryway. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, bank fraud, and illegal diversion of trust funds. Robert Vance, you are also under arrest for physical assault of a minor."

"What?!" my mother screamed, backing away until she hit the wall. "You can't arrest me! I'm an old woman! Daniel, tell them to stop! Tell them!"
"I didn't call them to stop them, Evelyn," I said, calling her by her first name for the first time in my life. "I called them to watch you pay for what you did to my son."
