Chapter 5 - Dawn Over Manhattan

“He didn't steal anything!”
Lily’s voice rang out through the grand penthouse, clear, sharp, and utterly devoid of fear.
Julian spun around, his eyebrows arching in mild surprise as the little girl stepped past Ethan, standing tall and defiant in her gray cashmere sweater.
“Ah, the little street rat speaks,” Julian mocked smoothly. “Tell me, child, did your dear old criminal father leave you the encryption key before he burned?”
“My father was an honest man,” Lily said, her voice shaking slightly with rage, but her eyes locked onto Julian with terrifying clarity. “And you and your crooked company murdered him and blamed it on his work! I didn't know anything about a drive. But I know that everything my father worked for was destroyed by men like you.”
Julian’s smile faded, replaced by a dark, ugly scowl. He signaled to his left enforcer. “Grab her. We’re taking her with us. Let’s see how cooperative Vance is when—.”
The enforcer took one step forward.
He didn't get a second.
The elevator chime chimed again—not a quiet, polite ding, but a loud, urgent series of alert klaxons. The steel doors blew open, and instead of more corporate thugs, half a dozen elite state tactical troopers swarmed into the foyer, weapons drawn and locked on Julian’s men.
“Federal task force! Drop your weapons! Hands behind your head, now!”
Julian’s face drained of color in a fraction of a second. He spun around, looking for an exit, but Ethan had already stepped forward, his expression carved from glacial ice.
“You forgot one fundamental rule of business, Julian,” Ethan said softly, stepping right up to his rival as federal agents slapped steel cuffs onto Julian’s wrists. “Never underestimate a father protecting his family.”
Julian was shoved past them toward the elevator, sputtering curses and threats that were abruptly cut off as the doors slid shut.
The penthouse grew quiet once more, save for the heavy breathing of the tactical officers securing the perimeter.
Ethan turned around immediately, kneeling down in front of Lily. His hands trembled slightly as he gently grasped her shoulders. “Are you alright? Did he touch you?”
Lily looked down at Ethan, then over at Leo, who was hobbling up beside them with a protective, fierce grin on his face. She looked back at the man who had torn down his own fortress just to keep her safe.
The walls of fear, doubt, and isolation that she had built around her heart for three long years finally crumbled into dust.
She didn't pull away. Instead, she threw her arms around Ethan’s neck, burying her face against his shoulder, and cried—not tears of fear or hunger, but the tears of a child who had finally, truly come home.

Ethan wrapped his arms around her tightly, burying his face in her hair, while Leo wrapped his arms around both of them.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the first rays of dawn broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the waking city in brilliant shades of gold and amber—a new day, a new life, and a future that could never be stolen away again.
