Chapter 3: The Price of Silence

At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the air was thick with the sterile scent of antiseptic and panic. Daniel was escorted through the heavy double doors of the maternity ward in handcuffs, flanked by two officers.
In the waiting room, Vanessa Cole was already sitting in a plastic chair, a female officer standing right next to her. Vanessa’s hands were cuffed behind her back, her champagne silk dress stained with rain and sweat. When she saw Daniel, her eyes flared with pure venom.
The heavy doors opened, and a tired-looking doctor in green scrubs walked out, wiping his brow. He bypassed Daniel entirely and walked straight to Detective Miller.
"How is she? How is my son?" Daniel yelled, straining against the cuffs.
The doctor turned slowly, his eyes filled with profound disgust. "Your wife is in the ICU, Mr. Pierce. She suffered a partial placental abruption from the fall. We had to perform an emergency C-section."
"The baby?" Daniel choked out.
"Your son is alive, barely, in the NICU. But he isn't out of the woods," the doctor said, his voice flat. "But the fall didn't cause the real damage. The toxicology report just came back from the lab. Your wife has been systematically poisoned for the last ninety days."
The waiting room went dead silent.
"A heavy synthetic hormone," the doctor continued, looking directly at Vanessa. "Designed to mimic natural pregnancy complications. High blood pressure, blurred vision, placental deterioration. It’s a drug used to induce late-term miscarriages without leaving a trace of foul play. Dr. Vance just confessed ten minutes ago after the feds intercepted her at O'Hare."
Daniel turned his head slowly toward Vanessa. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with sickening clarity. Vanessa didn't want him without the empire. But she didn't want the baggage of a child binding him to Harper forever. She had used Daniel's own money, stolen through his firm, to pay off a crooked doctor to murder his unborn child.
"You monster," Daniel roared, lunging toward her, but the officers slammed him against the wall.
"Save it, Mr. Pierce," Detective Miller said, pulling Daniel back. "You signed the papers. You turned your back on your wife when she begged you for help. You handed the weapon to the person who tried to kill your family because it was easy."

The elevator doors chimed, and a team of federal agents stepped out to take custody of Vanessa. As they dragged her away, she didn't look back.
Daniel was led in the opposite direction, toward a holding cell, completely stripped of his wealth, his reputation, and his freedom. Through the small glass window of the NICU, he caught a fleeting glimpse of a tiny, fragile baby surrounded by wires and monitors—a son he might never be allowed to hold, born into a world his own sins had destroyed.
