Chapter 4: Thirty Thousand Feet of Truth

The grand auditorium of the Chicago Symphony Center was packed to its three-tiered capacity. Over twelve hundred of the world's most powerful tech investors, media moguls, and political figures sat in the plush velvet seats.
Derek and Tiffany had been assigned seats in the front row, directly in the center—the prime location usually reserved for the executive elite. Derek’s confidence began to trickle back as he sat down. See? he thought to himself. Cameron is just playing mind games. If he wanted to destroy me, he wouldn't put me dead center in front of the global press.
Tiffany leaned over, smiling triumphantly, adjusting her diamond snake necklace. "He’s bluffing, Derek. He knows the company needs you too much to cause a real scandal."
On the raised stage, the massive, forty-foot high-definition LED screen glowed with the Rivers Industries logo. The ambient lights dimmed to total darkness, and a single spotlight illuminated the podium.
Cameron Rivers stepped up to the microphone. The applause was deafening, a roar of validation for the man who controlled the digital infrastructure of half the continent. He held up a hand, and the room fell into a pin-drop silence.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, board members, and honored guests," Cameron began, his voice echoing powerfully through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Every year, Rivers Industries gathers to celebrate innovation, growth, and the future. We talk about connectivity. We talk about building a network that brings the world closer together."
He paused, his eyes scanning the front row, locking briefly onto Derek’s smug face.
"But true connectivity is meaningless without a foundation," Cameron continued, his tone shifting, becoming darker, more deliberate. "A company is only as strong as its integrity. A man is only as successful as his character. And tonight, before we announce our global expansion, we need to address a structural failure within our own ranks. A failure that occurred thirty thousand feet above the earth, on an aircraft bearing our corporate seal."
Derek froze. A sudden, cold sweat broke out across his forehead. "What is he doing?" he whispered, his voice trembling.
"We talk about the Rivers family legacy," Cameron said into the microphone. "Let us look at what that legacy looks like when nobody thinks the world is watching."
Cameron didn't look back at the screen. He simply tapped the screen of his personal phone.
The massive forty-foot LED display flickered. The corporate logo vanished.
In its place, the interior of the private jet appeared. The resolution was crystal clear, captured by the high-definition cabin security backup system. The audio boomed through the theater’s acoustic system with horrifying clarity.
"Move," Tiffany’s voice sliced through the auditorium, amplified by a million dollars' worth of sound equipment.
A collective murmur rolled through the twelve hundred audience members.
On screen, Simone stood barefoot, her hand resting protectively over her prominent pregnant belly. The audience watched in real-time as Tiffany sneered, her glossy, cruel smile projected forty feet high.
"I said move your pregnant body out of my seat."
In the front row, Tiffany’s breath hitched. She half-stood from her seat, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. "Turn it off! Turn it off!" she screamed, but her voice was completely swallowed by the booming audio of the video.
The camera angle shifted, showing Derek sitting two rows away, staring at his phone, his thumb frozen for a second before he ignored his wife's soft plea: "Derek."
A wave of disgust washed through the auditorium. Prominent female tech investors in the second row covered their mouths in horror. The board members sat in stunned, paralyzed silence.
Then came the climax of the footage. On screen, Tiffany stepped forward, her eyes flashing with malice. She reached out, grabbed a fistful of Simone’s curls, and violently yanked her forward. Simone’s gasp of pain and her desperate cry—"Don't. My baby."—reverberated through the theater like a physical blow.
The video showed the flight attendant, Lisa, trying to intervene, only for Tiffany to snap: "This is a family matter." And finally, it showed Derek rising slowly, looking irritated at his wife, uttering the words that would seal his fate: "Tiff, just let her sit down. We don't need drama."
The screen went black.
The silence that followed was absolute. It was the silence of a guillotine blade resting at the top of its tower.
The house lights slammed on, blinding the audience. Every single eye in the theater—and every camera lens from the press pool—pivoted instantly toward the front row. Toward Derek Rivers and Tiffany Blake.
Derek looked around, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't control them. "It's... it's a misunderstanding," he stammered out loud to the row behind him, his voice cracking like dry glass. "It was out of context. She was being uncooperative—"
"Silence," a voice boomed from the side aisle.
It wasn't Cameron. It was Gabrielle Thompson, standing with a team of process servers dressed in dark suits. She walked down the steps of the auditorium, her heels clicking with rhythmic, terrifying precision. She stopped directly in front of Derek and Tiffany, pulling two thick sets of legal documents from her briefcase.
"Derek Rivers," Gabrielle said, her voice carrying flawlessly to the press gallery. "You have just been served with a petition for absolute divorce on the grounds of marital infidelity, extreme emotional cruelty, and constructive abandonment. Additionally, a temporary restraining order has been issued, effective immediately, barring you from coming within five hundred feet of Simone Rivers or her residence."
She turned her icy gaze to Tiffany, who was trembling so hard she had dropped her champagne glass, staining her emerald gown with dark, wet splotches.

"And Ms. Blake," Gabrielle smiled, a lethal, predatory curve of her lips. "You have just been served with a multi-million dollar civil lawsuit for assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress upon a pregnant woman. The Chicago Police Department is currently waiting in the lobby to execute an arrest warrant for misdemeanor battery."
Flashbulbs exploded like a wall of lightning. The paparazzi surged forward, their cameras capturing every second of Derek’s ruin and Tiffany’s absolute breakdown.
