Chapter 6 - THE FLIGHT HOME

One Year Later
The warm evening sun was setting over the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, casting a golden, ethereal glow across the manicured lawns of The Monroe Sanctuary—Grant Whitlock’s newest, most magnificent luxury resort.
Unlike his previous corporate developments, this resort was designed as a family retreat, built on land Grant had purchased in Tessa’s name.
Soft music floated through the air from the terrace overlooking the valley. Dozens of close friends, business partners, and local community members were gathered around the outdoor pavilion, holding glasses of champagne, laughing under the star-lit desert sky.
In the center of the lawn, six-year-old Noah and Liam, dressed in matching dark tuxedos with tiny bowties, were wildly chasing a goldendoodle puppy across the grass, their pure, ringing laughter echoing through the canyon.
Standing near the edge of the terrace, looking out over the red rocks, was Tessa.
She wore a breathtaking silk wedding dress that flowed around her like water, her dark hair styled in elegant waves adorned with fresh white orchids. Her skin was radiant, full of life, health, and profound joy.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind. Grant rested his chin against her shoulder, pulling her close against his chest.
"What are you thinking about?" Grant whispered softly, kissing the side of her neck.
Tessa smiled, leaning back against his chest, placing her hands over his. "I was just thinking about that Tuesday morning at Sky Harbor Airport."
Grant chuckled softly. "The flight I never took."
"You lost a thirty-million-dollar deal that day, Grant Whitlock," Tessa teased gently, turning in his arms to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"No," Grant said, his deep grey eyes shining with intense, fierce love as he looked down at her. "I walked away from a thirty-million-dollar distraction. And I found the only thing in this world that was ever truly worth keeping."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. Inside rested two simple, perfectly polished airplane boarding passes—from Phoenix to Seattle, dated one year ago today.
"I had them framed for my office," Grant murmured, tracing the edge of her jaw with his thumb. "To remind me every single day that being on time doesn't mean sticking to a schedule. It means showing up when it matters most."
Tessa smiled, tears of pure happiness glistening in her eyes. "I love you, Grant."
"I love you, Tessa," Grant whispered. "More than life itself."
He bent his head down and kissed her—a deep, lingering kiss filled with the promise of a lifetime of protection, devotion, and unshakeable love.

Behind them, on the lawn, Noah and Liam came running up the terrace steps, shouting with joy, plunging into their parents' arms. Grant scooped both of his sons up into his arms, pulling Tessa close against his side.
Together, surrounded by the warm desert breeze and the bright, endless canopy of stars, the Whitlock family stood united—whole, untouchable, and finally, beautifully home.
