Chapter 3 - Public Exposure

The ballroom became so quiet you could hear the ice melting in the champagne buckets.

On the screen, the video played at normal speed first, then zoomed in on Vivien’s hands. The clarity was brutal. Every guest watched as Vivien Marsh consciously, deliberately drew her lighter, looked at the three-year-old girl who was singing across the room, and set her birthday gifts on fire.

"Oh my God," someone in the third row whispered.

"Is that... did she do that on purpose?" another voice asked, horrified.

Vivien’s face went from pale to a ghastly, translucent white. She stared at the screen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Nathaniel! Turn that off! That’s... that’s an edited video! That’s a lie!"

"It’s from the closed-circuit system installed by Callaway Security," Nathaniel said into the microphone, his voice completely level. "It feeds directly to a secure cloud server. It cannot be edited, Vivien. Just like your character cannot be edited."

Clara Marsh marched toward the stage, her face twisted in fury. "Nathaniel Callaway! How dare you humiliate my daughter in front of her peers! Over what? A cheap piece of trash belonging to a servant? We are talking about the Marsh name!"

"The Marsh name," Nathaniel said, turning the microphone slightly toward her, "currently relies on a twelve-million-dollar credit line from Callaway Freight Systems to keep your family’s publishing house from entering bankruptcy next Tuesday."

A loud murmur rippled through the crowd. The financial instability of the Marsh family was a closely guarded secret, one that Nathaniel had discovered during pre-marital due diligence.

"As of thirty seconds ago," Nathaniel said, looking down at his watch, "that credit line has been revoked. All commercial accounts with Marsh Media are terminated. And your daughter’s presence in my house is no longer required."

Vivien rushed the stage, her high heels clicking frantically. She reached for Nathaniel's arm, her perfect composure entirely shattered. "Nathaniel, please! It was a mistake! The girl... she’s always around, she ruins everything! I was just trying to teach her a lesson about where she belongs! You can't do this to me! Not over her!"

"Where she belongs," Nathaniel said, stepping back so Vivien’s hands caught only empty air, "is under my protection. You, however, belong outside."

He looked past her to the security team at the door. "Escort Miss Marsh and her family from the property. If they refuse to leave, call the police and file charges for arson and reckless endangerment. I have the evidence right here."

The security guards moved in. Vivien screamed as a guard took her by the elbow, her diamonds flashing uselessly under the bright house lights that had just flashed back on. Her mother was shouting about lawyers, but nobody in the ballroom was looking at them with sympathy. The very society people who had been sucking up to the Marshes five minutes ago were now turning their backs, checking their phones, and drifting away from the blast radius of a ruined family.

Nathaniel set the microphone down on the podium. He didn't wait for the room to clear. He walked off the stage, through the side door, and toward the private elevators. His chest felt tight, a sensation he hadn't experienced since the day his parents' car went over the bridge. It wasn't anger anymore. It was something else—an urgent, heavy need to ensure that the small girl in the yellow dress hadn't lost her faith in the world entirely.
