Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Penthouse

Five minutes later, the private elevator doors opened directly into the penthouse foyer.
Grant Whitmore stepped out.
He looked unrecognizable. The immaculate, arrogant billionaire was gone. His suit was wrinkled and stained, his hair was unkempt, and dark, hollow circles carved deep beneath his bloodshot eyes. He looked thirty years older, broken and trembling.
When he saw Claire standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathed in the golden afternoon sunlight, he stopped.
She looked breathtaking. Healthy, powerful, and utterly out of his reach.
"Claire..." Grant choked out, taking a frantic step forward. "Claire, please... you have to speak to your brother! You have to tell him to drop the charges!"
Two heavy security guards stepped into his path, blocking him instantly.
Claire looked at him with an expression of quiet, detached pity. There was no hatred in her eyes anymore—only the total absence of caring.
"Why should I help you, Grant?" Claire asked softly.
"I'm your husband!" Grant cried out, his voice cracking hysterically. "We were married for five years! I know I made mistakes, Claire, I know I wasn't there for you at the hospital, but I was stressed! Vanessa was manipulating me! She meant nothing to me, I swear!"
"You left me to die, Grant," Claire said, her voice steady as marble. "You stood ten feet from my stretcher, listened to the doctor tell you I had sepsis, and walked away because your mistress's flight landed."
"I didn't think it was serious!" Grant wept, dropping to his knees on the polished wooden floor, clutching his hands together in desperate plea. "I thought you were exaggerating! Please, Claire, my father is ruined! I have no money left! They're going to put me in prison!"
Owen stepped out from the study, walking over to stand beside his sister. He placed a gentle, protective arm around Claire’s shoulders, looking down at the kneeling man with utter disgust.
"You reap what you sow, Grant," Owen said coldly. "You built your life on stolen land, stolen money, and the slow destruction of my sister’s spirit. Now, the bill has come due."
Grant looked up at Owen, then at Claire. He realized, with absolute, crushing clarity, that there was no mercy left for him in this room. The woman he had spent five years stepping on was now standing on top of the world, protected by a brother who had returned from the dead to crush him.
"Security," Claire said calmly, turning her back on him to look out at the harbor. "Escort Mr. Whitmore out of the building."
The security guards grabbed Grant by the arms, dragging him back into the elevator as he screamed and begged for forgiveness, his pathetic cries fading as the steel doors slid shut.
Claire turned to her brother, letting out a long, deep breath.

"It's finally over," she whispered.
"No, Claire," Owen smiled warmly, kissing her forehead. "It's just beginning."
