Chapter 1: The Ripple of Truth

"Is the room ready?" Zoe asked again, her voice muffled against Marcus’s neck, her small fingers tightening around Captain the bear.
"Almost, sweetheart," Marcus murmured, his voice a smooth, low anchor in the quiet lobby. "Just give Daddy one more minute."
He looked back up at Derek. The clerk was already looking away, adjusting a stack of pristine brochures, completely dismissing the man and child in front of him.
"Sir, I’ve already told you," Derek said, his tone dripping with practiced corporate exhaustion. "We cannot accommodate you tonight. I’m going to have to ask you to clear the desk for arriving guests."
Marcus didn't move an inch. Instead, he reached into his hoodie pocket with his free hand. He didn’t pull out a wallet or a platinum credit card. He pulled out a sleek, matte-black smartphone and pressed a single speed-dial button.
He didn't put it to his ear. He clicked the speakerphone button.
The line rang exactly once.
"Sir?" A breathless, sharp voice answered. It was Arthur Pendelton, the General Manager of the Grand Meridian, who lived in the private penthouse apartment on the twenty-second floor. "I saw your flight landed late. I have the penthouse suite prepared, and—"
"Arthur," Marcus interrupted quietly, his eyes never leaving Derek’s face. "I'm downstairs in the lobby. I’m being told the hotel is fully booked. I’m also being told that this isn't the kind of place my daughter and I can just walk into."
The line went utterly, terrifyingly silent.

Derek froze. The color began to drain from his face, starting at his temple and rushing down his neck. He looked at the phone, then at Marcus’s face, really looking at him for the very first time. The sharp jawline, the absolute lack of fear, the quiet authority that didn't belong to a beggar.
"I am coming down right now," Arthur whispered, the sound of a rustling suit jacket sharp over the speaker before the call cut out.
