Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Purge

The high-rise glass tower of Whitmore Construction in downtown Atlanta was bustling with nervous energy by two o'clock. Rumors had leaked that a major structural shift was occurring at the top level, though nobody knew the details.

Ethan walked into the executive boardroom wearing a rumpled suit, his eyes bloodshot. Beside him walked his corporate attorney, a frantic man who had spent the last two hours reviewing the Hayes Holdings documentation and realizing there was no legal loophole.

Margaret and Ashley sat in the gallery chairs near the back of the room, looking terrified. Vanessa had vanished the moment Daniel revealed the financial documents at the estate.

Claire sat at the head of the long mahogany table. She had laid baby Lily in a sleek, portable bassinet beside her chair. Daniel sat to her right.

The eight board members—men who had clinked glasses with Ethan at the luncheon three weeks ago—sat in tense silence.

"This meeting will come to order," Daniel announced. "As majority shareholder representing 51% of voting stock, Mrs. Claire Hayes Whitmore has called this session to address executive leadership and corporate direction."

Ethan slammed his hands on the table. "Board members, listen to me! This is a domestic dispute! Claire is using an old debt structure to launch an hostile takeover! I am the face of this company! I brought in the Metro Rail contract!"

Claire didn't raise her voice. She simply opened a black folder in front of her.

"The Metro Rail contract was secured using a six-million-dollar collateral guarantee from Hayes Holdings, Ethan," Claire stated calmly. "Which you signed without reading the fine print because you assumed it was a standard bank underwrite."

She looked around the table at the board members.

"Over the last six months, under Ethan’s direction and Miss Vanessa Cole's 'consulting,' Whitmore Construction has misappropriated two million dollars from the equipment maintenance fund to cover personal expenses, offshore accounts, and unauthorized luxury retainers," Claire continued, sliding financial audit reports across the table to each board member.

The board members quickly flipped through the pages. Muttered curses filled the room.

"Ethan, is this true?" one senior board member demanded, glaring at him. "You funneled corporate funds to Vanessa Cole's private agency?"

"I... I was restructuring our advisory board!" Ethan stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Vanessa promised an international expansion!"

"Vanessa Cole was leaking your bid numbers to rival firms in Charlotte," Claire said flatly. "Daniel has already filed the formal evidence with the SEC. She took your money and traded your secrets. You were so busy trying to prove I was beneath you that you didn't even notice the woman beside you was robbing you blind."

Margaret buried her face in her hands, sobbing quietly in the back corner. Ashley stared at her brother in absolute disgust.

"Under Section 4 of the corporate charter," Claire announced, "I move to remove Ethan James Whitmore from the position of Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, for breach of fiduciary duty and gross negligence."

"I second the motion," the senior board member stated without hesitation.

"All in favor?" Daniel asked.

Every single hand at the table went up, except Ethan’s.

"The motion passes," Claire said. She stood up, looking down at her husband. "Security will escort you to your office to collect your personal items. You have thirty minutes."
