Chapter 4 - The Noon Call

The clock on the wall of the Brooklyn apartment ticked to 12:00 p.m. Exactly on the hour, Evelyn’s primary phone rang. It was an unlisted number with a Washington, D.C., area code.

"Mrs. DeLuca?" a calm, authoritative voice asked.

"Yes, Special Agent Vance."

"The warrants have been executed across all five sectors," Agent Vance said. "The Newark facility was secured twenty minutes ago. We recovered the physical ledgers you detailed in Section Seven of your report. The ones Vincent thought he burned in 2024."

Evelyn took a slow sip of her coffee. "Did you find the secondary safe behind the electrical panel?"

"We did. It contained the original city contract bribes from the 2025 construction bids. Everything matches the digital copies you uploaded to our secure server over the last six months perfectly. The grand jury issued the indictment ten minutes ago."

"Thank you, Agent Vance."

"No, Mrs. DeLuca, thank you," the agent said, his tone turning serious. "In fifteen years of chasing the DeLuca family, we’ve never seen an operation this clean. You didn't just give us a case. You gave us the entire structure."

"Vincent always said I had an eye for detail," Evelyn said quietly, before hanging up.

Ten miles away, inside his private office, Vincent was staring at a television screen. The local news anchor was standing outside his Midtown construction site, where federal agents were currently taping up yellow crime scene banners.

“...breaking news this afternoon as DeLuca Development, one of the city's largest private contractors, faces an unprecedented federal sweep. Sources say the indictment includes charges of racketeering, grand larceny, and corporate fraud, totaling over three hundred million dollars...”

His office phone rang. It was the private line—the one only three people had the number to. He snatched it off the cradle. "Evelyn! You think you're clever? My lawyers will have these warrants thrown out by dinner! You signed half those corporate documents yourself! If I go down, you go down with me!"

"I don't think so, Vincent," her voice came through the receiver, cool and completely undisturbed by his rage. "Check the corporate structure of DeLuca Holding Corp. Look at the amendment filed on January 14th of this year."

Vincent’s hand shook as he clicked through his laptop files, opening the corporate registration records. His eyes scanned down the digital document until he reached the signature lines.

Evelyn’s name had been completely removed from the executive board. In her place, using a power of attorney he had signed over to her during his throat surgery two years ago, she had transferred her entire corporate liability to a secondary shell company whose sole legal director was listed as: Savannah Cole.

Vincent looked up from the screen, his chest heaving. Savannah was sitting on the leather couch across from his desk, blindly applying lipstick, completely unaware that she had spent the last eleven months signing documents that made her legally responsible for every dollar of laundered money that passed through his books.

"You set her up," Vincent whispered, the horror finally settling into his bones.

"No, Vincent," Evelyn replied. "You wanted to give her my place. I just let you."
